While working on a rabies vaccine, French microbiologist Louis Pasteur and his assistants made sure to always have a loaded gun nearby. Why? They would study the disease by keeping infected animals in the laboratory basement and periodically pinning down the rabid specimens to take samples of their blood.
But, the gun wasn’t intended for the rabid animals. Rather, staff was directed to shoot any human staff member immediately in the head if they were accidentally bitten!
