Why do some parents decide whether they want a boy or a girl?

Written by:  Jamie

You may have heard it from your grannies that how someone by looking at the baby bump could predict the sex of the baby. While many would believe them, there was hardly any evidence to support its reliability. But, fortunately, you have advanced scientific methods today that are far more authentic and progressive in this matter, such as taking a baby gender DNA test.

As a couple, you don’t need to wait for your delivery time to learn about whether you gave birth to a son or a daughter. Like many others, you can also find out how baby gender selections happen and, most importantly, why you should think about it.

In this article, you will learn about the reasons that make selecting your baby’s gender a wise idea.

To avoid the risk of contracting a hereditary gender-based disease

In clinical terms, a baby girl embryo contains two ‘x’ chromosomes, whereas a boy embryo consists of one ‘y’ and one ‘x’ chromosomes. Since some genetic disorders can be harmful to particular sex, parents may want to choose the gender of their to-be-born to prevent him or her from them. For example, if a part or whole of the X chromosome is not present, the doctor can recommend you to opt for a male embryo.

The recessive or dominant sex chromosome and gender-based diseases have a close relationship. Parents can go for genetic testing to detect the possibility of risks with their to-be-born and select the gender for his or her health.

To bring balance in the family

Other times, the willing parents may opt for sex selection to complete their family based on what suits them most. For instance, some parents may choose particular sex because they lost a baby in the past, or they feel they can bring up a child of a specific gender better than the other. Besides, some families can have a couple of children of the same sex; hence, they may want to opt for the opposite gender. Or, due to specific cultural and religious beliefs, some parents can give preference to one sex over the other in terms of the first-born.

If you also identify with one of these situations or believe in giving your child a healthy life, you and your partner can choose sex selection. It is not legal in many countries, such as the UK, China, Canada, and Australia. However, America is an exception in this area. Tourists and locals take benefit of the fertility treatment in the USA to either build a family of their dreams or to prevent the risks of transmitting inherited gender-based diseases. Nowadays, genetic tests have become quite advanced, claiming to deliver 100% accurate results.

So, whatever may be your concern or choice, you can also think about the sex selection of your infant.  Just remember, the cost of treatment can vary from one place to another, depending on the treatment procedure. Also, even if you are choosing it for family-balancing and there is no problem with the conception of the baby, you may have to follow the same protocols and treatments as the other couples with infertility issues.
