Ways Working Moms Can Further Their Career While Raising a Family

Written by:  Jamie

So many moms have had to continue working while raising their families, and for many there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to get everything done. Between juggling rides to and from school, getting to work on time, fixing meals, keeping up with household chores, extracurricular activities and everything else that goes into being mom, there is little time left to even think about furthering their careers. However, there might just be a way to advance your career even with all you are currently doing if you follow a few well-placed tips.

Make a Schedule and Stick to It!

Before even thinking about getting a Masters in Social Work at Rutgers University, you need to think about what it is that you do that takes so much of your time. It’s time to rank your day to day activities by importance. If there are things you are doing that could be left for weekends and days off, eliminate them from work days. Make a schedule and include some time for yourself.

You will, of course, include time for family outings, time with your husband and time for necessary weekday chores, but it isn’t impossible to work in a few hours each week to take online courses so that you can further your career without even traveling to and from a college. All you need is a computer and internet access and you can study from home as you complete each level of graduate school.

Enlist Help from Family

One of the things we have lost in contemporary society is the concept of extended family. So many families live within their own little bubble when there are cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents and other family members living just down the street. You would be surprised how many would be willing to help if you asked them. Sometimes you can get cousins or grandparents to watch the kids for an afternoon or two so that you could focus on studying. Not only does this help you get more done but it allows kids to grow up knowing they are part of something bigger and more connected than their nuclear family.

Looking to complete coursework for an online Social Workers Masters degree? If so, your family would probably be more than happy to pitch in with rides and other duties that would free you to continue your studies. They are, after all, your family and your successes will be their successes, so give it a try!

With the benefits of having the internet at your disposal there are ample ways in which you can save time and still complete everything you need to do, study for your MSW online, keep your job and have playtime with the kids. By studying from home and cutting out activities that are unnecessary and eating your time, you will see that you can advance your career and still be a great mom. It’s simply about prioritizing. These little tips should set you on the right path. Enjoy motherhood and by all means, keep moving upwards! There is, after all, no reason not to.
