Well, here is a tear-jerker for you.
In true Ken Jeong fashion, he’ll find a way to make you laugh, even when you’re in the midst hearing of some serious information. That is probably why he was such a well liked doctor prior to leaving his career in internal medicine to become an actor. His first big role? Leslie Chow in The Hangover.
Now, you may have known that Ken Jeong started off as Dr. Jeong, but what you may not know is why he committed to taking the big leap into motion pictures. It was actually his wife Tran who asked the doctor/comedian to take the role. She had recently been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer which was aggressive and spreading. Jeong explains in the video above that laughter was the best medicine for both of them. She feared her husband was suffering from caretaker burnout and insisted he take the role. As much as the funny character may have been therapeutic for Jeong to play, he reveals that the real reason that he signed on was to make his wife laugh.
Tran was 2 years cancer-free when the movie was released, and at the MTV Movie Awards, when Jeong went up to accept his golden popcorn trophy, he gave the most moving and silly speech the award show has ever seen. Grab the tissues…
And much love to the entire family.
