Vacation Blues: Tips for Avoiding that Post-Vacation Depression

Written by:  Jamie

You’ve planned your trip with a baby in tow, had a perfect vacation and are now back home getting ready to get back to the daily grind of work and other responsibilities. You settle back into your routine, but for some reason, you feel really blue, super-down even.

Believe it or not, this depression has a name, it’s called post-travel depression and it is very real, especially for those that might suffer from depression already. Below, you can find a few tips to help you overcome those feelings of post-vacation depression before it becomes too much for you to handle.

What Is Post Travel Depression?

The first thing you need to know is exactly what post-travel depression is. By definition, it’s a form of depressed or anxious mood that some travelers feel upon returning home after a trip. The symptoms can range from mild to severe and include everything from sleeping too much to being extremely irritable with those around you, and from headaches to mood swings.

Consult Your Doctor

If you have a history of depression, then it’s probably best if you contact your doctor when you feel the symptoms of post-travel depression setting in. If you live in Los Angeles and suffer from extreme depression, then contacting a professional for TMS Los Angeles can make all the difference. The point is to not ignore your symptoms as simple after vacation blues if you already have depression issues.

Take a Little Time to Ease into being Back Home

No matter how humble it may be, there truly is no place like home. Remember, there’s a reason you love your home. It will be nice to sleep in your own bed, to wake up in the morning and drink coffee out of your favorite mug, won’t it? Maybe there is a certain chair you curl up in to watch TV every evening after work. Instead of dropping your suitcases and heading to your desk to work or out to work, curl up in that chair, watch TV, and just enjoy being home for the day.

Clean Your House

While you probably cleaned your home from top to bottom before you left for vacation, there is nothing like cleaning your home when you come back to get you into the routine you left behind. Think about it for a second, when you’ve been staying in hotels or even at a beach house for a week, your own home can feel strange and unknown to you. Cleaning your home can help you reconnect to your house and stave off depression at the same time.

It also gets those suitcases and bags you brought back with you unpacked, and you can even start decorating with the items you picked up during your vacation, so you have your vacation spread out around you to remind you of the fun you had. Besides, what’s better than a fresh-smelling, clean home to remind you that home is indeed where the heart is?

Keep Sharing Via Posts and Blogs

Many people post on Twitter, Facebook, or write on their own blog every day while they are on vacation to share what is happening and the fun they are having. Once they get back home, they stop writing, posting, and sharing. Don’t do that! To ward off the travel blues keep on writing on your blog and keep sharing on social media sites. You can even save some of those experiences or photos you have from your vacation to share and write about once you’re at home settled in front of your own computer. Remember, the more you connect, the less chance you have of giving into those post-travel blues.

These are just a few tips to help you fight the depression that often comes after a vacation. Remember, there’s no place like home, and staying connected is key.
