Tips to Stay Warm When Your Boiler is Broke

Written by:  Jamie

Your boiler is the most important part of your home in winter as it is responsible for keeping every corner of your house warm. You are here, so we assume that your boiler is broken down. Don’t worry! We have got you covered. We’ve mentioned a few tips in this article that are effective short term solutions to the problem. Be sure you are heeding them to say away from the bitter cold.

This article may have provided you with alternatives, but to make sure that your boiler is always functioning properly, you need to take out boiler insurance. The boiler cover will stand all the expenses of any breakdown and failure of your heating system. However, while you wait for an engineer to come and fix the issue, these things mentioned below can be very helpful!

Layer up Clothes

First things first, be sure you are adding extra layers of clothing, so you are making sure that you stay warm and comfortable. Each layer will work as insulation, which will stop your body heat from escaping and keep you away from the cold as well. Try to avoid one wearing one big coat instead prefer to layer up clothes as they will provide more insulation and trap in extra heat. Don’t forget to wear gloves and a hat for the best results.

Hot Drinks and Food

What could be better than a warm and hearty meal in the middle of the cold winter day? This is even better when your house heating system is not working. Keep all your salads for summer and grab a bowl of hot soup. Keeping yourself warm with hot food is a great way to stay toasty. Moreover, a cup of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate will be perfect for keeping your hands warm when you have no gloves on. Having a nice mug of hot cocoa will not only relax your mind but will warm your body as well. So, while you are waiting for an engineer to come and fix your boiler, why not have a cup of any of your favourite hot drink or sip some warm broth? Sounds good!

Use Electric Heater

Every house should have an alternative heating system like an electric heater to retain heat. Having another heating source like heater can be expensive, and most probably, you’ll have to buy multiple of them for a different room, but it is effective. Before turning the heater on, double-check that all your windows and doors are closed properly. This is will help in warming up space faster and will reduce the cost as well. However, be careful with your heater and never leave it on overnight, I repeat, never!

Boil Water

While your central heating system is not working and not providing you with hot water, you can still have water. All you need to do is to boil it in a kettle or a pan. After you have boiled the water, pour it into water bottles, wash up and take a bath. Just be careful that you are mixing some cold water into it so that the water is not too hot. This way of staying hot is not energy-efficient, but it’s definitely a short term solution.

Get a new boiler (potentially for free?)

If your boiler is in disrepair and you are really struggling to get it repaired affordably, then you can consider applying for a government grant, which can help you fund part or the entire cost of a brand new boiler installation. A free boiler isn’t likely in all honesty, but you could receive some support nonetheless, you can make an application at Boilergrants.org.uk.
