Tips For Backpacking In Europe

Written by:  Jamie

Have you just finished four grueling years of college? With you degree in hand, no doubt you feel like you can conquer the world. Congratulations to you on this enormous accomplishment. If you’ve decided to take the summer off to celebrate, you’ve made an excellent choice. A backpacking trip through Europe will be an experience full of brilliant memories that will last a life time! Follow these suggestions from the travel professionals to ensure your trip is a huge success.

The first step is to secure your dates and set your budget. Check the expiration date on your passport. If your passport has expired or you are applying for the first time, allow at least two to three months for processing. This can be longer leading up to the busy travel season. Many European countries require at least ninety days remaining prior to expiration after your date of departure from that country. Make a copy of your passport and leave it at home before your trip.

Most European cities are very pedestrian friendly. Invest in a pair of very comfortable walking shoes and wear them frequently before the start of your trip. One of the keys to a successful backpacking trip is to pack light. Take advantage of the awesome deals offered by Groupon coupons and stock on basic t-shirts and jeans from the super selection and value offered at A’GACI.  Pack your backpack fully at least a week before your trip to gauge the weight. For the next several days, wear the backpack with the equivalent weight to strengthen your back and shoulder muscles. If need be, omit some of your selections to lighten your load.

Check with your cell phone carrier on the options for data plans in the countries you’ll be visiting. Purchasing SIM cards in each country can be cumbersome, expensive and time consuming. Free Wifi hot spots are not nearly as popular in Europe as in the United States. Finally, order a quantity of Euros from your bank. Europe is a cash economy and many smaller establishments do not accept credit cards. The exchange rates will be more favorable at your bank that those found in the local train stations and airports. Best of luck to you!
