Laboratory-Grown Vaginas Successfully Transplanted into Patients
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina created laboratory-grown vaginal organs that were successfully transplanted into young women with a rare medical condition.
The transplants were all performed on teenage girls (ages 13-18) who had been affected by Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome. The condition causes the vagina and uterus to not form properly and is relatively rare (1 out of every 5,000 live female births).
