International nonprofit WaterAid has come out with a series of photos focussing on what moms around the world pack in their bags when preparing to give birth. The goal is to raise awareness of the lack of clean water, hygiene and sanitation in many areas. In some areas it is so bad that hospitals don’t even have safe water access.

The term “rainbow baby” refers to a baby born following a miscarriage, still birth or infant loss. It references the rainbow at the end of the storm and signifies the brightness and color this new baby brings back to their parents’ lives.

Between 2009 and 2012 Russian photographer, Jana Romanova, completed a photo-series featuring 40 pregnant Russian couples sleeping, one representing each week of pregnancy. She wanted to capture the most natural, vulnerable moment of the day for expectant parents. She started the project because her friends were all having babies and she was feeling left out, but not ready to have one on her own.
