Utah Mom given a Letter by Principal Asking Her to Cover up While Breastfeeding

On Wednesday, Andrea Scannell was given the letter from a school’s principal asking her to cover up while breastfeeding.

Scannell and her family were attending a school lunch program at Mount Logan Middle School located in Logan, Utah, when the incident occurred.

“One of the workers approached me with a sealed envelope and said, ‘I highly encourage you to read this’ and I said, ‘Is this because of the breast feeding?’and she said, ‘Just read it, it’s very tastefully written’ … Keep Reading!!!

Ballerina Documents Pregnancy- Birth & Beyond

Several months ago, professional ballerina Mary Helen Bowers‘ photos documenting her pregnancy went viral. She has since had her adorable baby and allows others to keep up with her family via Instagram.

I don’t really follow people I don’t actually know, but her photos are so beautiful that she is worth the anonymous follow.

Country Singer Jessie James is Stepping Up to Normalize Breastfeeding

I’m really starting to like Jessie James.

She shook conventional standards when she posed in a sexy GQ spread with her husband while she was pregnant.

Once baby Vivenne was born, Jessie became an unlikely breastfeeding advocate. The country singer initially posted an Instagram photo of herself pumping backstage.

She kept up the trend of documenting her breastfeeding journey by posting a photo of herself breastfeeding her 4-month-old daughter on the beach. The caption simply says, “Loving this day.”… Keep Reading!!!

Michigan Passes Law Protecting a Mother’s Right to Breastfeed in Public

Prior to 4:30 Tuesday afternoon it was legal in Michigan to discriminate against a woman nursing in public.

Not anymore!

While it is still unclear what the penalties will be for establishments or individuals who discriminate against a breastfeeding mother, this law approved by Governor Snyder (and sponsored by state Senator Rebekah Warren) has many Michigan moms breathing a sigh of relief.

Michigan is now the 46th state to pass this type of legislation protecting a mother’s right to breastfeed … Keep Reading!!!

My Breastfeeding Journey with an ABO Incompatibility

By: Victoria Gensheimer

On October 11, 1989, I gave birth to a 9lb. 13oz baby boy. He was my second child. He was healthy and took to breastfeeding like a pro. When he was 22 hours old, I was informed that his bilirubin level was 8, which meant he was jaundiced. Since this level was measured from the cord blood, they viewed that as being “high.” Treatment would require the standard photo therapy; keeping him under lights. Right before discharge, … Keep Reading!!!

Wambui: “Let’s Talk About Breastfeeding”

Images and text by Wambui Njuguna

Screen Shot 2014-05-27 at 7.20.07 PMHello! My name is Wambui and I am the besotted first-time mother of my three-month old son named Sesam.

Letʼs talk about breastfeeding. In public. Letʼs see…I breastfeed on buses and in planes; in airports and at bus stops. In bookshops. In the fitting rooms of department stores. On picnic chairs at hardware stores. My baby has been latched on when Iʼve had to board the bus and pay my fare; I had to … Keep Reading!!!

A Breastfeeding Story: Dry Nursing

Images and text by Jessica Casey.

Ollie 1Oliver was born full-term, at 37+3 weeks gestation. He was small, weighing only 5lbs 8oz, which the medical staff attributed to the placental tear and pre-eclampsia I had developed. There was some fetal distress during delivery and he was born dusky, but crying. Immediately, the MD who delivered him noticed that he had a significant tongue tie. In fact, his tongue wouldn’t extend past his gums at all. The attending pediatrician brushed it off, … Keep Reading!!!

A Breastfeeding Story: Combo Feeding

A Breastfeeding Story Banner

Before I became pregnant, I had always assumed, like so many of my friends and family members, it would take months (or even years) to conceive – if we were able to at all. My husband and I have always planned to adopt regardless of whether we had a physiological birth or not. So, when I found out I was pregnant on my 29th birthday, I was overwhelmed with the blessing that there was a poppy seed sized baby for … Keep Reading!!!

Child-Led Weaning: Sara

Image and text by Sara Waldecker.

The full-term breastfeeding story I’m going to begin by telling is my story. I don’t remember it, though.

I was exclusively breastfed by my own mother in a time and place when doing such a thing was rare. I nursed until shortly after my little sister arrived when I was two and a half, tandem nursing with her until I moved on.

I have no memory of actually breastfeeding. I clearly remember the … Keep Reading!!!

Did You Know? Catching Species

By A.M. -IANtB Science Editor.

Deer are what’s called a “caching” species, which means they leave their babies alone for long periods of time while off foraging, etc. Their milk has more fat and protein to sustain them during this time away from mom. (This is why you should not assume a lone fawn in the woods has been abandoned! If you come across one, leave it alone because mom will be back.) Comparatively, human milk has less protein and … Keep Reading!!!
