One moment you’re feeling the sun on your face, the salt in the air, the sand between your toes, and the wind in your hair. The next, you’re staring at a blank computer screen with a blinking line awaiting the next word, in an office that sits at a comfortable 75 degrees all day long. The only sensation of wind you experience is your co-worker’s constant passing between the coffee machine and the bathroom, and there’s not a single window or ray of sun in sight. Don’t lie: we all daydream at work.
But there’s one thing we don’t all do, and it’s actually bring those daydreams to life. Oh, take your pick. There are so many to spend your time squandering your eight-hour work day away: skiing the slopes, walking the beach, surfing the edge, snorkeling the reef, Netflix in bed, so on and so forth. Whatever our go-to daydreams may be, we leave them at our desks at the end of each day, and are content with never bringing them to fruition.
This world is too full of amazing places, incredible people, and beautiful aesthetics to leave those dreams at your desk. Pick yours, and bring it to life.
Easier said than done — trust me, I know. Taking time off work, finding a baby/pet sitter, locating flights, buying flights; the list goes on and on. But living out a daydream and giving you that breather that you know you very well deserve, could be as easy as getting in the car and driving to the nearest beach, forest, or mountain and having a picnic. Grab a ticket to that concert you would normally never go to and break a little loose. Drive to the mall and buying that boho bralette that screams summer. Dance away those worries, dress in your daydream’s aesthetic, and watch as your daytime desires become real-life realities.
Now if your heart soars a little higher, and your subconscious daydreams a little bigger, find those plane tickets. Make that jump–no leap is too large. Dreaming of a tropical paradise? Chase it. Buy those sandals, put a little away each month, and before you know it you’re taking surfing lessons on the waves of Waikiki. Jump out of that plane with a parachute on your back and feel the freedom you know you deserve. Strap those skis to your boots and taste the excitement behind every twist and turn. This life is too precious, too short, and too wonderful to tuck these dreams in a box and only pull them out as distractions.
Whether it’s as small as buying those clothes you know will turn heads, or surfing a wave that will change your life, stop dreaming and start pursuing. We work all week, all month, and all year to support a life that makes us happy. Make sure yours is making you as happy as you desire. Your daydreams, bucketlist, and life deserve it.
