How to Style a Home on a Budget

Written by:  Jamie

When you see the interior of a home that has been lavishly styled and decorated, you might believe that it always costs a fortune. It is true that a lot of interior designs can be on the pricey side, but there are also lots of homeowners just like you. Just like you can put together an inexpensive outfit that looks great, you can also style your entire home on a super tight budget. So, forget about getting furniture from a high-end store and prepare to get your furnishings, accessories, artwork and more for less than you would expect to pay.

Always Shop for the Essentials First

If you walk through your house and take a good look at what it looks like in its present state, you would probably find several pieces that you really like. It could be that grandfather clock that you got at a garage sale or an old secretary desk that was left to you by a relative. Even as far as entire rooms and themes go, there are going to be elements inside your home that you really don’t want or need to change. Styling your home doesn’t mean that you have to throw out all of your furniture and start completely fresh. Instead, think about what areas you do want to spruce up and get the essentials first. Investing in quality yet inexpensive furnishings or even hiring a carpenter to make the essential pieces will help to keep you within your budget.

Add DIY Projects to the Mix

After you have gotten all of your key pieces of furniture purchased, you can start to fill in all the gaps with DIY home styling projects. This is the part where you can have unlimited fun and really express your creativity. Use resources like Construction2Style for inspiration as well as instructions on DIY home styling, upgrades and improvements. You can create your own backsplash in the kitchen and have it turn out looking fabulous. You also don’t need to be an expert in order to sand down those hardwood floors, stain, and refinish them. Just listen to the advice of the professionals and don’t skip any steps in the process.

Don’t Forget About Inexpensive Upgrades

Home style is about comfort, but you need more than faux fireplaces and flowy curtains to make your house chic. Look at the different ways that you can upgrade your home and make it more modern. Digital thermostats are easy as pie to install, they are practical, stylish, and add value to residential property. Doorbell cameras are another trendy yet inexpensive upgrade that will help you to feel comfortable and at ease in your home while also giving you a lot more freedom of movement.

Get a Second Opinion from an Expert

Whether you think you are all finished up styling your home on a budget or you have not even begun, getting the feedback of an expert can make all of your design ideas feel more cohesive. If you have a friend who is an interior designer, show him or her some pictures of the furniture you have picked out. Find a home styling forum and see if you can piggyback off their ideas. You can also hire an interior decorator or a home organizer for some final thoughts on what you are preparing to do with your home.

If you are okay with choosing just one room to concentrate on for the moment, go ahead and do that. Styling your home doesn’t mean that it has to remain under a tarp for the next six months. Go at your own pace, make the changes you truly want to see, and be happy with all of your best efforts.
