Sesame Street is welcoming a new character to the Sesame family. The show, that has always made a point of being inclusive to all children, is welcoming Julia to the neighborhood. Julia is a friend to Elmo and Abby Cadabby and has autism. She made her debut in a new online story book, titled We’re Amazing 1,2,3
Author, Leslie Kimmelman, has a personal reason to write the book; over 20 years ago her son received his diagnosis of autism.
my world changed instantly and profoundly. I knew nothing about autism, and it seemed that those around me—even the professionals—didn’t know much either.
She is happy to see that today’s parents experience more awareness and understanding of autism, and people on the spectrum. Leslie believes the most important thing for people to understand is that every person with autism is affected differently. The important thing for everyone to remember is that we’re all different in some way and that’s what makes the world more interesting.
She has poured her passion and knowledge into this book, which is available on Sesame Street’s website, for free. Sesame Street also offers a large array of resources for children with autism and their families.
