Reflexology is a system of massage applied on specific points of the feet and hands. The theory behind reflexology is that the upper part of the body corresponds to the upper part of the feet and the lower part of the body corresponds to the lower part of the feet. Similarly, the left and right side of the body are controlled by left and right feet respectively. All these points in the feet areas correspond to different organs and systems of the body.
Reflexologists believe that when pressure is applied to these reflex points, it stimulates the functions of different organs and boosts a person’s natural health. The origin of reflexology goes back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, but this therapy was introduced to the West by Dr William Fitzgerald, who proposed the ‘Zone therapy’. He believed that reflex areas on the feet and hands are connected to other areas and organs of the body within a similar zone.
Reflexologists are guided by foot charts, describing all the reflex points to be stimulated for action. Sometimes these practitioners use objects like rubber balls, rubber bands, spiral and wooden sticks, to perform their task. Expert reflexologist may include chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists, among others.
Reflexology Session for Rheumatoid Arthritis–
A trained reflexologist always makes assessment of your individual needs and treats you accordingly. If you have any additional ailments like high blood pressure, diabetes, migraines or insomnia, then the reflexologist takes step by step action in his therapy, so that it doesn’t interfere with other ailments. The patient must drink plenty of water after a reflexology chart session.
During a typical reflexology session, you need to lie down and relax, with clothes on, except for your shoes and socks. The reflexologist may wash your feet and soak them in warm water, then position them close to him.
The therapist starts by checking your feet for open wounds, rashes, sores, warts or corns and asks you about any foot or leg pain complaints that may cause trouble.
Generally, a session lasts between 30-60 minutes. After each session a general feedback is important, for a follow up session.
