There are ways in which you can help combat the stress of relocation within your family unit. Obviously, make sure that you are well prepared for your move and that you have plenty of food and refreshment close to hand for your journey and for the arrival at your new home.
Another way is to try to keep your kids calm, especially if you have pets with you, as they will feel the tension within your household members.
Look after your kids
It is no secret that relocating and moving are very stressful times, and your kids will find that it is even more stressful than you do. Coping not only with the not knowing what is to come but also with letting go of the known can cause all kinds of anxiety and stress issues to surface. This is even more so if you are planning to move some distance and will be requiring your kids to change schools or colleges.
Leaving old friends can not only be sad but, for some kids it can be devastating, while making new friends can be difficult due to friend groups already being formed and close-knit. Moving into new areas where formed groups of friends can feel threatened by a new arrival can result in bullying and other unsociable behavior towards your child.
During these times, it is important that you keep a close eye on your kid to make sure that they are ok and that there are no issues that are not being shared. Keeping in contact with old friends is a good way to create support as they are more likely to talk their friends about their problems rather than go to an over-stressed parent or guardian.
Keeping yourself sane
Make sure that you plan your move carefully and that you are happy with the removal business that you have chosen to deal with your move. Removal businesses can be very expensive. If you only have a small number of items to take with you to your new home, you may find that hiring the services of a large item shipping business may suit your needs a lot better and save you money while you move your small items with you. Alternatively, you may find that the business you choose for your large shipping items can also help you with your smaller items too and could therefore save you a lot of time, money and hassle dealing with different businesses or having to do half of your move yourself.
Keep an eye on your pets
You may also find that where the rest of your family is in a heightened emotional state that has a mixture of excitement and stress, your pets are more to the other end of the scale of emotions, and that is of stress, dread and the feeling of not knowing what is going on.
This is where bad behavior may occur or different behavior to that which you are used to seeing. You may find that in order to combat this, it may be better for your family pet to spend a day or so with a family member that they trust or a good friend so that they do not experience their items being packed away but go from one home straight into another that already has their items and a hint of their own smell about.
