Reducing Family Expenses

Written by:  Rex

Determining the best way to save money while you have a family takes dedication and effort. it can cost thousands of dollars to raise a child, and that is not even factoring in college expenses. Whether you just have one child or your family is growing quickly, there are a few ways you can save on your family’s expenses.

Reducing Monthly Expenses

If you have debt, it could be the single biggest drain on your monthly budget. Even if you only make minimum payments, you may still be spending several hundred extra dollars each month. If you have debt from school, you can refinance your student loans into a new loan with the help of a private lender. That can significantly lower your monthly expenses going forward.

Cut Down on Food Costs

The more people in the household, the higher your grocery bill will be, so it’s important to cut down in this area. This can seem difficult with rising prices but planning your meals can help you save. And you won’t necessarily have to compromise on quality or nutrition either. You can find options that are healthy and offer ways to detoxify and cleanse your body, while nourishing it, that do not break the bank.

You can create a meal plan that will guide your weekly grocery shopping. It’s a good idea to use only cash for your trip so you are not tempted to pick up extra items that can increase your bill significantly. When you have a weekly meal plan, you can tailor the plan to what is on sale that time. You could use your phone to find money-saving options when coming up with a menu.

Going with Secondhand

Getting shoes and clothing for the kids can be expensive, especially if you only purchase new. Instead, search yard sales, consignment stores, and thrift shops for lower cost items. If you have friends or family members with slightly older kids than yours, you may be able to swap clothing. Online marketplaces are a great place to find bargains with neighbors in your area.

Having Fun Frugally

Entertainment and vacations are easy areas to overspend, so try to avoid overthinking your vacation time. Travel and entertainment do not have to be expensive to be memorable and fun. Your kids just want to have fun with you, so you don’t have to spend lots of money on them. Camping is a fun and inexpensive way to relax over the weekend.

Planning for Birthdays and Holidays

Try planning for birthdays and the holidays early instead of scrambling to purchase everything later on. You can come up with a budget for gifts for the year and keep the money in a separate savings account. It’s a good idea to add a small amount to the account each pay period so you can save enough money during the year. Looking at your account balance can help you see at a glance how much you are able to spend. This also prevents you from racking up credit card bills after the holidays. Right after the holidays is a great time to find deals on items the stores are looking to get rid of. You can save these until the next season.
