Protect Yourself From Pests Year-Round

Written by:  Jamie

Keeping pests out of your home is a year-round job. Many people believe that if you live in a colder climate, you do not have to worry about pests or rodents in the winter because they will die or hibernate somewhere. That is not entirely true. More often than not, homeowners will find that their rodent or pest problem worsens with the onset of colder months. You may even see pests in your home for the first time, even if you do not normally have a pest or rodent problem. That is because they seek out warmth and are trying to escape the cold. If you have a pest or rodent problem, you need to call up pest control Kansas City in order to take care of it before it worsens.

Luckily, in addition to contacting a reputable Pest Control Kingston company, or a similar expert in your area, there are a few things that you can do to keep the pest and rodent problem under control. You want to take a few minutes to walk around your home and look for any cracks or holes where bugs or pests can get through and make their way into your home. You will want to seal them up. Plus, it will also help to keep the heat in your home and the cold out. Even if the hole you find seems small, you would be surprised as to what a mouse can squeeze through. Don’t take any chances and be sure to seal everything up.

Fall is a good time to spray for bugs as they are trying to find warm places to burrow and makes nests. You want to take care of it before they have the chance to multiply. Also, be sure to check the inside for signs of spiders or rodents. Look for spider webs and mouse droppings. Remove any webs, egg cases, or abandoned wasp nets so that they will not be able to return to them.

Rodents and other pests can cause substantial damage to your home and will also create long-lasting odors. They will seek out places to hide, such as your basement and attic space and will chew through everything. They will burrow into your insulation and can also chew through electrical wires causing a fire hazard. They will also chew through clothing, carpeting, and blankets. They will urinate on everything, and they also carry many diseases. They may even die in your ductwork, or another difficult place to get to, causing a foul stench throughout your home.

Pests can even cause structural damage to your home. Pets, such as Powderpost beetles, create tunnels in wood and will lay eggs. They will burrow through any wood they can causing extensive damage that is very expensive to repair or replace. These are just a few of the many unwanted pests that can move into your home and wreak havoc.

Even if you never see a pest or rodent, there are many clues that will tell you if you have some hiding in your home. You may want to shine a flashlight in your crawlspace or attic. You may hear scurrying in the walls, ceiling, or cupboard. You may also find bite marks or little holes in furniture or in the floor.

Termites are a well-known pest that will also cause the structural integrity of your home to be compromised. Termites are responsible for about 5 billion dollars in structural damage in the United States every year, and they are a very aggressive pest. If given the chance, they will literally eat you out of house and home and will build massive colonies that will take over your dwelling as they eat away at your investment.

Carpenter ants are another pest that you don’t want anywhere near your home. They will also destroy your home if given the chance, and they will build extensive tunnels in any wooden structures. They come very close to termites when it comes to structural damage that they can cause.

It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, pests are pests, and they will continue to destroy your home and property. If you suspect that you have pests or rodents in your home, do not hesitate to get the problem taken care of before it is too late.
