Practical Steps To Help You Get Over Your Divorce

A lot of people wonder how to get over someone without actually taking concrete steps. Reality check – it’s tough you had to break up your marriage, but the good thing is that there are ways you can get over your ex and move on with life in a more fruitful and satisfying way.

These are a few practical steps to help you get over your divorce:

1. Open Up With Someone

It is best to speak with a professional, like a good licensed counselor or therapist. You should find someone who can help you say your side of the story and channel your negativity into positivity. Professionals are trained on helping people process through a split. They will allow you to feel your feelings and talk about your emotions in new and uplifting ways.

You can also reach out to a trusted friend or pastor if you are worried about speaking with a professional about your finances.

2. Maintain a Journal

If you are thinking ‘how to get over someone’ chances are you have probably come up with a few solutions on your own. The trick is to hold those thoughts and act on them. People tend to be emotional wrecks after a divorce. Maintaining a journal will give you a chance to come to peace with your feelings and voice out your most intimate thoughts.

Journals can be instrumental in helping you process through your feelings. Use any medium you are comfortable with – digital or traditional pen and paper. What’s important is that you journal every day and maybe even multiple times a day.

3. Find Divorce Workbooks

There are several divorce workbooks that can help you through this difficult time. Many of them offer sound advice and lend a fresh perspective to events. For instance, you may be blaming yourself for the divorce only to find you were married to a self-obsessed person who did not love anyone but themselves. You need to identify and learn from your mistakes. Eventually, you will find someone else to keep you company. But, the only way your future relationships will be fulfilling is if you do not make the same mistakes again.

4. Find a Hobby You Like

It is possible that you have too much free time on your hands following your divorce or separation. Rather than wasting away these precious hours on your couch or drinking yourself to death, find a hobby you actually like. Maybe you like playing the tuba and your ex-spouse couldn’t appreciate great music. This is the best time to pursue the things you like. You will be amazed at the transformation in your life and world when you treat yourself by doing things you want.

5. Don’t be an Island

It is important that you don’t alienate yourself from the world. This is the time when you need your friends and family the most. Unfortunately, the hard truth is that people tend to take sides in a divorce. If you find yourself without any friends after the divorce, don’t despair. Reach out to a support group or people at work. You need to lean on people to help you through this.
