Female Misogyny

“Girls just don’t like me.”

I started hearing those words for the first time in middle-school. I still hear grown women saying some form of that phrase (“All of my friends are men, I just get along with them better.” -I bet you’ve heard that one before). I bought into it like everyone else did. I had friends tell me that other girls didn’t like me, and so the seed was planted. I learned to judge and fear women, and … Keep Reading!!!

Dr. Jay Gordon Answers Your Questions

First in a series with Dr. Jay Gordon.

We asked you on our facebook page what questions you had for Dr. Jay Gordon.

Here are his answers to five of your questions:

1. My middle daughter has autism. Are there any supplements that he would recommend for her?

Dr. Jay:

My approach is very basic: a sugar-free, gluten-free, dairy free diet is the heart of treatment kids with ASD.  Some children with autism don’t absorb vitamins and other nutrients … Keep Reading!!!

My Better Half

Who is the strong silent man behind the blog?
No one seems to know. He does need to keep a bit of mystery on here, but we will let you in on a little more of his personality.

Brian and I met the month I turned sixteen. He was almost twenty-one at the time. He wanted nothing to do with me because I was so young. Needless to say, I was fuming by this rejection. I didn’t hear from him … Keep Reading!!!

Taking a Stand For What You Believe In

Time magazine - Use the media for your cause

I keep getting asked this question:

“Do you think using the media is good way to spread an important message?”

I absolutely do! There are some things worth mentioning before jumping into something as crazy as a potential media firestorm, though.

MAKE SURE THE DECISION IS UNANIMOUS.

Your entire family needs to be on-board. You are a unit, make important decisions as one. A media firestorm will effect every member of your family, so you’ll all need to be … Keep Reading!!!

why sometimes it is good to get lost

It’s no secret- I have no sense of direction.

GPS was invented for people like me, and ironically I still have yet to own a vehicle with built-in GPS, or the device itself.

Anyway, a few days ago I managed to get lost with the with the kids again. We were driving around aimlessly down an alley-like side street when the clouds parted and this lovely sight appeared:

You are so so loved.

Is It Okay To Touch Someone Else’s Child?

When Samuel first arrived home it was very important for him to get a sense of our roles as a family. This is another way to build attachment and help him grasp that he is part of a new family. This was initially difficult for us to do, because when Samuel first arrived home he showed signs of indiscriminate friendliness.

I.F. is a common issue among  adoptees (especially in orphanage or multiple caregiver settings). We haven’t completely worked through this … Keep Reading!!!

Getting Fed To The Wolves

Well, I finally watched all the interviews I did the day the TIME cover was released. Brian said it was important for me to see. I can’t stand hearing a recording of my voice, so you can imagine how horrifying it was for me to hear audio accompanied by video! Being shell-shocked is not the best way to be interviewed, I’ve decided. Where was my Xanax when I needed it?

Here are my thoughts on what I just witnessed. Nothing … Keep Reading!!!

The Getty

I have been reluctant to bring the boys to The Getty because I did not feel they were quite old enough for the experience. However, my views have changed. My friend Alexandra and decided to brave The Getty with our preschool-aged children.

Admittedly, we did not make it into the building. However, we bought snacks and spent hours in the gardens. What a beautiful and inspiring place for children. It is like Alice in Wonderland.

The Getty charges $15 … Keep Reading!!!

Homeboy Industries

Today I will be spending my morning at Homeboy Industries.
Last week, I brought my friend Shannon on a bit of an adventure (the girl is up for anything fun) to check out what Homeboy is cooking up-  and apparently that would be baked goods and salsa (among other things).

Homeboy Industries serves at-risk and gang involved youth with a continuum of services and programs designed to meet their multiple needs, and runs four businesses that serve as job-training
