Allowing infants to stay close to their mothers, by their side at work, is one of the key components to the happy and well-rounded staff at Henna Preschool in Huntington, South Africa.
Peggy O’Mara has a popular quote that isn’t technically about bringing your child to work, but I thought was very fitting of this circumstance:
“Don’t stand unmoving outside the door of a crying baby whose only desire is to touch you. Go to your baby. Go to … Keep Reading!!!
He jumped into working with the Awassa Children’s Project, an orphanage dedicated to improving the community and lives of HIV/AIDs orphans of Awassa, Ethiopia.
He was also with me when I met Samuel’s birth family. Samuel’s first mother and his siblings welcomed us into our home, where Jay sat respectfully and gave each child … Keep Reading!!!
In December, a woman flying from Colombia to Spain was going through customs at the Barcelona airport, when authorities noticed she was bleeding from under her breasts. When they questioned her about it, she said she had just had a breast augmentation surgery.
Since the woman had come on a suspicious flight, and security felt she was acting strange, they sent her to the hospital.
That was where medical professionals uncovered 1.4 kilos of cocaine in her … Keep Reading!!!
Samuel has been asking us for a blue mohawk for about six months.
We used spray, but he was adamant about using a less temporary color on his hair.
Brian and I were on the fence about it, so I decided to pose the question to our Facebook page and received an overwhelming number of helpful and thoughtful responses.
In the end, I sat down with Samuel and had a talk with him about why he wanted … Keep Reading!!!
The boys and I got home from the beach and there were a couple of packages waiting for us. I opened one up and to my surprise I saw this:
Those are shrimp… I think.
Someone sent us live sea creatures we were not expecting.
The package was addressed to “Brian Grumet”, but when I spoke to him at work, he had no idea from where or whom they came. “Just flush them,” said the man … Keep Reading!!!
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.”

Someone in my building was getting evicted and he refused to leave and threatened to jump off his balcony. The Sheriffs were even there to physically evict him. Somehow his tactic worked because he is back in his apartment tonight. So now I’m thinking instead of paying rent every month I’ll just threaten to jump off our air-conditioning unit (since we don’t have a balcony).
If you’re interested in how the brain works, but you don’t want to go to medical school for psychiatry, a career in psychology may work for you. For many people, a psychology degree ultimately manifests itself in a career in counseling. There are many paths for counselors, and it can get overwhelming. One popular and meaningful path is to work with juveniles and children, and one way to do this is to pursue an online master’s in school counseling. … Keep Reading!!!
Yesterday, we started our first homeschooling bacteria growing experiment. #awesome
However, I think I over-shared with the boys during our experiment.
The petri dishes made me flash back to a story my dad told me about when he was finishing up his Masters in Nutritional Science at UC Berkeley and his sandwiches kept getting stolen.
My dad was a body-builder and would go work out at the same time everyday at the gym after class. He would … Keep Reading!!!
300,000 women each year will be diagnosed with Preeclampsia or HELLP Syndrome.
Knowing the signs and symptoms is the single most important thing you can do to increase you and your baby’s chance of survival.
Unfortunately, you can’t always trust the medical community to make an early diagnosis. Preeclampsia, and especially HELLP, are finicky diseases in the beginning stages and often go undiagnosed until the situation becomes severe.
Preeclampsia affects between 5-10% of all pregnancies. HELLP is considered rare, but … Keep Reading!!!

It is easier to be emotionally responsive when you feel in balance. Create a support network, set realistic goals, put people before things, and don’t be afraid to say “no”. Recognize individual needs within the family and meet them to the greatest extent possible without compromising your physical and emotional health. Be creative, have fun with parenting, and take time to care for yourself.
This past year was one of the most poignant of my life, but not for the reasons you may think. 2012 brought me to the home of my son’s birth family and his first mother, the person who gave him life. 2012 also brought me to the man who ended my brother’s life, the police officer who shot him that horrible, horrible night.
In the beginning of 2012, I felt moved for various reasons (in large part, because Brian had … Keep Reading!!!
