How to Care for Your Carpets When You Have a Pet

Written by:  Rex

Many will agree that pets are what truly make a house a home. However, in exchange for furry cuddles and kisses in front of the television, you will have to put up with pet hair on your carpets and perhaps even the emergence of odors over time. The good news is that it is quite simple to give your carpets the TLC that they deserve even when you have a pet around – you just need to know what to do (and what not to do!).

Consider the type of carpet that you buy

If you have yet to purchase carpets for your home, you are probably wondering what type is best to invest in when you have pets indoors. First and foremost, it is a good idea to consider a darker-colored carpet if you are worried about dirt and stains. This is especially important if your pet is not yet properly house-trained! Dirt and stains won’t show up nearly as much on a dark carpet as they will on a lighter hue.

Secondly, it is usually best to buy a low pile carpet as these are generally much easier to keep clean and free from pet hair. They are also known to withstand foot traffic better, meaning that they often last longer than their high pile counterparts.

Trim your pet’s nails

Long or jagged claws have the potential to cause damage to all types of floors, including carpets. They could snag the delicate fibers and cause the carpet to begin to unravel, leaving behind bare or disheveled spots that significantly impact the aesthetic appeal and longevity of your investment. Ideally, you should strive to trim your pet’s nails every three-four weeks.

Call on the professionals regularly

Most homeowners can get away with having their carpets steam cleaned once a year. However, if you live with pets, it is recommended to call on a reliable carpet cleaning Herne Hill company at least every few months. Professional carpet cleaners will not only deep clean your carpets, but they will also deodorize them to ensure that they smell as amazing as they look.

Remember to keep an eye out for companies that specialize in eco-friendly carpet cleaning solutions to ensure that the products used are safe for your pets or any children who might live with you or come to visit.

Vacuum a few times a week

The easiest way to keep your carpets in excellent condition in between steam cleaning sessions is to vacuum them at least three times a week. A quality vacuum will effortlessly remove dirt, debris, and pet hair; however, you can also use a stiff-bristled broom to get the job done if need be.

Spot clean stains

It is important to spot clean pet-related accidents as soon as possible to prevent them from permanently discoloring your carpet. You can use a specialized stain remover or make your own by mixing together two cups of white vinegar, two cups of warm water, and four tablespoons of baking soda.

Take these pointers into consideration, and you’ll be able to keep your carpets looking stunning for many years to come.
