How Do Escape Rooms Work Your Brain? 5 Mind Blowing Benefits for Braniacs

Written by:  Jamie

Who hasn’t wanted to be locked in a room by a stranger at some point in their lives? Alright, escape rooms may seem like a strange phenomenon, but there’s no denying their popularity.

Escape rooms offer a unique experience. But more than that, they also offer some interesting benefits for your brain.

How do escape rooms work your brain? Read on to find out.

Go Team!

There’s no getting out of an escape room without working together. Cooperation is a skill that many of us know is important on an intellectual level — but that doesn’t mean we’re great at following through with it.

Escape rooms are a strong reminder of why cooperation matters. But they’re also a reminder that cooperation can be fun and enriching for all involved.

Beyond the Box

It’s sad, but it’s not often in our lives we really get a chance to think outside the box. Most days pose the same challenges.

An escape room shakes things up. By presenting you with new and unique challenges, you’re forced to think in ways you wouldn’t normally. Your mental inertia gets to move out of the wheel-ruts of habit and on to something new.

That can even spark creativity in other ways. Try looking at other areas of your life to see if your newfound lateral thinking can make some changes.

An Experience a Day

Time has a way of speeding up when every day’s the same. Soaking up new experiences and new ideas is how our brain really counts time.

If it’s been a while since you did something out of the ordinary, an escape room can be the perfect remedy. It’s a chance to do something you wouldn’t normally do in a day and break out of your routines — that may not sound like much, but it makes a big difference.

Building Bridges

Whether you’re locked in there with friends or team building with work colleagues, an escape room is a great opportunity to connect with others.

Working together gets you talking and helps to break the ice or the awkwardness of a neglected friendship. You’re forced to communicate if you want to solve the problem.

When you all escape together, there’s also that element of shared victory — that’s one of the strongest kinds of bond out there.

The Natural High

There’s no greater incentive for your brain than getting that dopamine hit. Feeling good after achieving something releases a heady cocktail of fun into your brain, lifting your mood.

Escape rooms are a fantastic way to unlock that feeling. After working hard at a challenge, the flood of relief and feeling of success can give your brain a hard-earned reward.

How Do Escape Rooms Work Your Brain: Explained

If you’ve found yourself asking “how do escape rooms work?” and wondering what they mean for your brain, you now know. So why not check one out and see if you can enjoy the benefits?
