House Warming Gifts for a Loved One’s New Home

Written by:  Jamie

As all millennials will know, finding a new home is no easy feat. With the rising prices of mortgages and continuous rates of pay, finding an affordable place to live can be particularly difficult. So when someone manages to find the home of their dreams, it’s definitely a situation worth celebrating. Whether they throw a housewarming party or not, it’s always a thoughtful idea to get them a little something to help them settle in. Here are a few ideas to get the ball rolling.

A Card

With the increasing popularity of social media, letters and cards have steadily become a thing of the past. Most of us only receive bills and bank statements through the post. So a personal, handwritten card will be a heartwarming surprise. Find out your loved one’s new address and make sure to post a new home card. There are plenty of designs available out there. Pop it in the post first class and send your best wishes.

Bedding

Moving into a new home involves a lot of organisation. The people moving can often forget important things in the chaos. Bedding is often one of these. Who can blame anyone for forgetting it? With all of the decisions to be made in regards to bed bases, mattresses, pillows and duvets, things like bed sheets can easily fall to the wayside. Make a gift of some Egyptian cotton sheets. These are comfortable, have a high thread count and are high-quality, meaning that they will last for years.

Doormats

Quirky doormats are a great way to welcome people into your home. There are so many designs out there that there’s bound to be something that will suit your loved one down to a tee. You could even opt for personalised designs, such as “welcome to (insert name)’s home”. If they don’t want other people on the street knowing their personal names, they could always use it outside of their back door. Not only is this a cute and quirky addition to any home but it will help to protect the brand new flooring from dirt.

Photo Frames

New homes can feel empty and relatively lonely places. It takes a while to warm to them. So what better to make the place feel more familiar than the presence of loved faces. Look out for pretty photo frames that match the home’s interior decor (if you don’t know the interior design opt for neutral and minimal designs and frames) and put cherished photos in them. This can be photos of you and your loved one, pets, or simply leaving the frame empty for them to choose an appropriate photo. Alternatively, if the person you’re buying for is into their music, you can get frames that hold an LP record. These can then be hung on the walls to showcase their taste.

A Coffee Machine

Most of us are coffee drinkers. The caffeine perks us up when our energy levels are running low and the taste is an added bonus. Why not invest in a good quality home coffee machine for their new kitchen. To play things safe, opt for neutral tones like silver, black or white. However if the kitchen space has a distinct colour scheme, try to find something to match. There are all sorts of brightly coloured machines out there. You don’t need to opt for anything too flashy. The basics will usually do for the home.

Candles

Candles can help to make any home space feel more relaxed and comfortable. They can transform almost any space into a romantically lit haven. What’s more? There’s a whole host of different scents that will suit any household. From sweets scents like vanilla, chocolate, coffee and ice cream to more earthy scents like sandalwood. Alternatively, try out floral scents like lavender, rose and daisy. If you know your friend has a signature perfume that they use, check whether the brand offers a scented candle to match. This will go down perfectly and they’re guaranteed to adore the smell. If the new home has children in it, a reed diffuser might be better, as it will pose less of a fire risk but will still manage to spread delicious smells from room to room.  You can also gift them a wax melt burner which is also another safer option to candles.

Vases

Flowers can brighten up any new home and chances are the new homeowners will have plenty delivered to their door. So make sure they have plenty of vases to store them in! Consider the amount of space that they have and their flowers of preference. Long stemmed flowers like lilies will need long stemmed vases, while shorter stemmed flowers like roses might be more at home in bowl glasses.

House Plants

Flowers are a beautiful temporary arrangement, but houseplants are much longer lasting. So this could make the perfect gift: a new plant for a new home. There are plenty of easy to care for options available, so it can be hard to choose. However, consider finding something with beautiful meaning behind it. Peace lilies are a lovely housewarming option, as they are a neutral shade of white which will match most interiors. The new home can also be a chaotic environment but a peace lily will supposedly bring peace and tranquility to the space around it. They also naturally purify the air, making a space feel more clean and breathable.

Water Purifier

Tap water varies for area to area. The type supplied to your loved ones’ new home may be different to the kind that they’re used to. What better to give them than a water purifier? It will filter out any impurities, leaving fresh water that is perfect to drink. Regardless of where the new house is, its new tenants won’t be left with a bad taste in their mouth. This is also something that they probably won’t consider buying themselves and that others are unlikely to pick up for them, meaning that they will especially appreciate the thought and kind gesture.
