Lou Xiaoying
Lou Xiaoying, 88 years old, has saved the lives of over 30 abandoned babies since 1972. She made her living as a trash collector/recycler in an impoverished area of China.
This profession unfortunately has exposed her to the discovery of unwanted babies left for dead in the trash.
Upon discovering the first baby in the trash, Xiaoying was left with a difficult decision. Barely making ends meet, she was not financially in a comfortable place to take on the responsibility of an addition human being. However, she decided that the only answer was to save the child she discovered.”I realised if we had strength enough to collect garbage how could we not recycle something as important as human lives,” she explained.
She raise four of the rescued children as her own, and passed the rest on to close family members and friends. She found her youngest son Zhang Qilin, now eight years old, was found in a dust bin when she was 82 years old.
“Even though I was already getting old I could not simply ignore the baby and leave him to die in the trash. I took him back to our home, which is a very small modest house in the countryside and nursed him to health. He is now a thriving little boy, who is happy and healthy.”

Kate Ogg
Kate Ogg delivered her twins at 27 weeks gestation. Kate and her husband David’s elation of welcoming two new members of the family quickly shattered when they heard the news that one of their twins, their son Jamie, did not survive the delivery. After 20 minutes of trying resuscitate the preemie, Jamie Ogg was pronounced dead and handed to the family to say their goodbyes.
Kate and her husband embraced their child together when Kate intuitively unwrapped her lifeless son’s body and held him to her skin. After two hours of being hugged Kate and David noticed their baby took a small gasp of air. Although the doctors were adamant that it was just a reflex action.
This wasn’t a good enough answer for Kate, who then decided to feed baby Jamie breastmilk off of her finger. It wasn’t long after that that Jamie opened his eyes, held out his hand, and grabbed his mother’s finger.
‘He opened his eyes and moved his head from side to side. The doctor kept shaking his head saying, “I don’t believe it, I don’t believe it”.’ Kate Ogg explained in a Daily Mail interview.

Monique Zimmerman-Stein
Monique Zimmerman-Stein is a mother who shares a rare genetic disorder with her children that causes blindness. Even though Zimmerman and her family are one of the lucky American families with private health insurance, they are still faced enormous debt from medical bills accrued from a broken system. Unable to pay for the medical expenses of the entire family, she opted to save her daughters’ sight by sacrificing her own sight-saving (and costly) injections.
This sacrifice eventually caused Zimmerman-Stein to go blind.
