As a stay-at-home mom, you know how important spending time with your kids is. Even if you had an amazing career before, coming into the office every morning ready for the workday ahead, your priorities have changed now. Your kids matter most, and it’s going to be that way for a while. But just because you’re staying at home, that doesn’t mean that you can’t help out by working. There are lots of remote jobs out there, which you can do easily from the comfort of your own home (or while watching the kids at soccer practice, or while you’re waiting for play rehearsal to end). It’s a great way to make money.
If you’re considering jumping into remote work, but you aren’t exactly sure if it’s right for you, here are some reasons why it’s a great choice for any stay-at-home mom.
1 They’re easy to find
You know what a headache it can be to look for work. And now that you’re a stay-at-home mom, you’re always busy. Whether it’s changing diapers or getting all the groceries that meet everyone’s dietary requirements, the last thing you have time for is to dust off your résumé and start crafting cover letters for each job out there. But the great thing about remote jobs is that there are many of them out there because the world is your oyster.
So if you’re impatient to get started, you can sign up to teach English as a foreign language or become a virtual assistant. These jobs don’t require too much prior experience, and you can find them quickly by completing any Google search. For English-teaching jobs, you only need a BA and to be fluent in English; for VA positions, some office experience is enough to get you started.
Job site FlexJobs experienced a 17 percent increase in job posts in 2017, and it’s no surprise, considering how many employers are recruiting remotely now. Even traditional brick-and-mortar stores like dress shops are going online now!
2 You choose your schedule
We know you’re busy. We know you’re busier than you ever imagined you would be, which is exactly why remote work is such a great fit for a stay-at-home mom. While browsing job sites, you’ll start to see that many of these jobs don’t work like a traditional nine to five job. Instead, they might pay you per hour worked or per project, which means that you’re being paid to complete things. You know, instead of sitting bored at your desk all day waiting to hear about another assignment.
If you decide to work for yourself, then you’ll have even more freedom. And it’s easier than it sounds! All you need to do is sit down and think: what am I good at? For example, if you’re always having fun conversations on Facebook with your friends (phone in one hand, baby in the other), then maybe you could become a freelance content writer. Once you’ve gotten some experience on a site like Upwork, you can set up a website that has your rates, info about you, and your portfolio. Once you’ve got some clients, you’ll automatically get more. Because according to a Nielsen study from 2016, 82 percent of Americans seek recommendations from friends and family before making a purchase.
Additionally, include a blog on your website. This will up your popularity, and over time, you’ll get more customers. You can also use affiliate ads or create an ebook if you want some passive income in the meantime. 3 It’s easy to build a career over time
If you’re worried about your kids’ college fund, there’s no need to anymore. Remote work is a great way to build a career, but doing it at a pace that works for you. According to Forbes, “4 percent of employees said they would quit their jobs to work for an organization that would allow them to work remotely more often, even if their salary stayed the same. But working remotely doesn’t mean workers need to sacrifice on salary. In fact, there are a plethora of options for people looking to both make serious cash and work anywhere they want.”
So whether you’re designing feather flags for local businesses or giving accounting advice online, you can be happy knowing that when your kids are teenagers, they’ll have learned a lot from you on how to choose a career and build it.
As you can see, working for a remote business–or creating your own–is a great choice for stay-at-home moms. What other creative ways do you make and save money while staying at home?
