What to do if you hear a whistle in the pipes

Written by:  Jamie

If you hear a whistling sound in the pipes of your home you should never just ignore it. This type of noise generally indicates that there is an issue with one of the valves or that there is a blockage somewhere in the pipes. Obviously, if either if these is the case the problem needs to be addressed and resolved.

You have a couple of choices when it comes to dealing with a whistle in the pipes of your home. You can click this link for information about help from a professional plumber, or you can choose to try and resolve the issue yourself first. If you choose the latter option here are some potential causes you should investigate.

Checking the taps in your home to locate the whistle

Before you can stop the whistle that is coming from the plumbing in your home you need to locate its origin. The easiest way to do this is by switching on the taps in your property. This way you will be able to tell if the whistle is originating from one of the taps. You should listen to see if you can hear the whistle when you switch on a specific tap.

If this is the case you need to ascertain whether the noise is coming from the tap valve or the lower valve. Once you have identified the correct valve it needs to be removed and cleaned. You should also examine the valve to see if any parts of this need to be replaced. If the whistle is emanating from one of the taps in your home taking these actions should solve the problem.

Why you may need to check the main water valve

The main water valve in your home controls the pressure of the water. If this pressure is too high a whistling noise can be the result. This is why it’s a good idea to try reducing the pressure if you hear a whistling noise coming from the plumbing in your home.

If this does not work then you can try increasing the pressure. If there are any blockages in the system doing this can help to clear them. A blockage can be the cause of whistling in the system, and removing it can stop the noise.

It’s also a good idea to check that the main valve is working as it should and that none of its parts need to be replaced.

You should never just ignore a whistling noise that is coming from the plumbing of your home. You may be able to solve the problem yourself. If you do not feel confident enough to do this, or your efforts are unsuccessful, you should hire a professional plumber to take a look and resolve the issue. This will put a stop to the annoying whistle and make sure that the plumbing system in your home is running as efficiently as it should.
