Guide to Understanding Addiction

Written by:  Jamie

Millions of people suffer from some form of addiction and for some addiction is just a word. Unfortunately, addiction is a very real condition that destroys thousands of lives every year. It is often called a social disease because instead of simply hurting one person, it can hurt everyone around the addict. When dealing with addiction yourself or if someone you love is an addict, it is important to understand what this condition really is.

What is Addiction Really?

Addiction is a disease of the brain, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. What addiction is not is a moral failing or a character flaw. Scientists have long since discovered that addiction is not a lack of willpower or morals but a complex disease with many causes and facets.

Some drugs are psychologically addictive, while others are physically addictive. Many change the chemistry that makes up your brain and body to create a physical dependence that is nearly impossible to break. It also creates withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal is when you stop using a drug and feel physical or mental sickness.

What is Treatment?

Treatment is simply dealing with the addiction in an organized manner. There are many forms of treatment and places to treat addiction. One of them is through Texas rehab centers. A rehab center is a place that specializes in addiction and treating it.

It is important to remember that addiction is a chronic disease. This means that it not only requires treatment, it means that there is no way to completely cure it. Curing addiction means that you can use drugs or alcohol again with no risk. If you use again you will wind up in relapse.

What is Relapse?

Relapse is returning to addiction after treatment. It is very easy to relapse back into your addiction. Each chance you take, each time you try drugs or alcohol again, you run the risk of relapsing. There are many things that cause relapse but the leading cause is stress.

Who Needs Treatment?

Anyone who is unable to control their use of drugs or alcohol, is an addict. Those who cannot stay away from a substance or who continues to use a substance despite the negative consequences is addicted to that substance. Unfortunately, there are millions of people addicted to a behavior or substance, in the United States alone. Many addictions are deadly and if you cannot stop using the substance, it will eventually kill you. Most people who are addicts will use the substance until they are dead, unable to stop without treatment.
