Guest Post Submission
Hello! Thank you for your interest in submitting a guest post to IAmNotTheBabysitter.com.
If you’re thinking of a blog post for this site please take a minute to review the checklist is below. In most cases reviewing this and using it as a guideline for your submission will lead to your article being accepted.
These guidelines are in place to maintain high quality content for our blog and most posts that do not meet these criteria will either be declined or moved to the bottom of the pile.
That said, here’s how to make sure your article makes the cut!
Sign the guest writer agreement.
It’s based on Mashable’s standard agreement, and it’s a requirement for my liability insurance. Please sign it here before you get started. There is a spot below where you can upload the signed agreement. A digital camera picture of your signed agreement IS acceptable, but submit it because I can’t run anything without it.
Quality posts and original content.
We are looking for two main categories of content. High-quality or viral content. High-quality content includes articles >350 words that address a topic that will be of interest to our readers. It may be regarding a current event or hot topic in the news. It may also be about a controversial topic. If so – try not to take a side. Present the facts and let the readers form their own opinions. Viral content speaks for itself.
Make sure to dig deep into a topic and treat the post just as you would a full-page Op-Ed for The New York Times. It is always easier to cut the unnecessary stuff than it is to figure out what’s missing. Always back up your research or stories with links or references.
Be SPECIFIC and get into exact details.
Here are five articles we would accept:
Please give us 3-4 weeks to respond! This blog requires a bit of work and we have a hard-working underpaid staff, so understand if takes us a few weeks to get back to you.
Optional: Send me a few topic ideas *before* drafting anything.
Before you write your posts, send us 3-5 of your best topic ideas based on your ideas and we can give you a better idea of what we would be looking for. Email ideas to firstname.lastname@example.org.
TECHNICAL REQUEST: Always have links open in a new tab, please. In other words, I don’t want people to leave my site. Here’s how to format links to open in a new tab.
For extra credit, please suggest further reading from past posts on my blog that are relevant, and then link to them. Use the search feature on the right sidebar to help.
Include actionable takeaways and recommended next steps.
Readers care about your story, of course, but they also need to learn specific lessons from your post.
Create quality “evergreen” content.
Nearly all of the posts on this blog are written to be just as relevant, if not more relevant, five years from now. The most popular post from the last four years is “(URL COMING SOON).” No matter when that post is read, the content will always be relevant and people will share it. Having evergreen content is what made this blog successful, and it’s the most important thing to keep in mind when writing your post.
Send me the right formats.
– Please send me the post in one of two formats 1) Word doc and/or 2) HTML
– If possible, please host any images on your own servers (or Flickr, or whatever), and format them to display at 500 pixels wide. All that said, still email me the image as attachments, just in case I need to access them or tweak something. If you aren’t able to figure out the hosting, I can do it, but it can delay publication.
Remember and accept that I have final editorial call.
This means that I might want to delete or rework sections entirely. If you’re not OK with me freely editing your stuff (mostly for clarity and format), my blog isn’t the right place for your piece. I’m not out to twist your words or rewrite your post. For what it’s worth, most writers enjoy my edits and appreciate them. I do the least necessary, not the most possible.
Have fun with it!
If it’s not fun for you to write on some level, it won’t be fun for my readers to read. Tell stories, crack jokes if you like, and be yourself. Try and enjoy the process and the end product will be better.
Media Media Media.
Having pictures and/or video can provide a richer reading experience, assuming the pics/videos are high quality. A great way to upload media is through Dropbox.com. Their service is free and allows us to share files easily and safely.
Do you have a video you think you have a video the world needs see or is just really funny? Submit it to us here and we may post it!
