Pastors and church leaders have the crucial task of leading churches and building God’s kingdom, rather than their own. In addition to studying the Bible and spreading God’s word, pastors are responsible for looking after and nurturing the spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing of their church congregants. Pastors should do their best to live exemplary lives and encourage others to work to build the body of Christ. Nobody’s perfect, so pastors and members of church leadership teams should remind believers that everyone is learning and growing in the Christian journey together.
Pastors and church leaders also have the responsibility of praying for and emotionally supporting Christian believers and non-believers alike. In addition to providing emotional support, and teaching and preaching traditional doctrine and Scripture, pastors may provide counseling and offer comfort and visits to church congregants and those outside of the church. Other services pastors perform outside of Sunday morning worship include officiating weddings, presiding over funerals, and baptizing believers.

The pastor and appointed church leaders, including the lay leader, trustees, youth ministry leaders, and worship team leaders, among others, should work together to meet the organizational goals set by church boards. Board members strategize and plan how churches will have success in achieving their mission, create an annual budget and financial reports, and conduct assessments to determine what aspects of church leadership and operations are successful and what may need improving. Pastors and church leaders lead churches in ethical ways that enable the church to meet its goals and have a positive impact on the community.
Members of church leadership teams follow Jesus’ teachings, live prayer-filled lives, and support pastors. Pastors build a relationship with God the Father and encourage others to do so as well and work to improve the church and promote its growth.
Following Hebrews 13:17, people should obey their pastor and church leaders. They should also pray for them and shower them with affection and words of encouragement. Just as pastors have concern for their congregants’ souls and wellbeing, church members should pray for their pastors’ and leaders’ souls and ministry, and ask God to protect them against spiritual attack.

Church members can give their church leaders physical demonstrations of support in addition to prayers. Pastors and church staff bring knowledge, experience, spiritual gifts, and talents to churches and use them in unique ways that benefit and enrich everyone. National Clergy Appreciation Month, in October, as well as Christmas, are occasions to celebrate pastors’ and staff members’ gifts and dedicated service to God. People can express their admiration and appreciation year-round with the right gift.
Some churches collect love offerings for their pastor and church leaders during National Clergy Appreciation Month. During this time, church members may gift their pastors and leaders with flower bouquets, cards, decorative art, monetary gifts, or certificates and gift cards to restaurants, businesses, and stores that they like. At some churches, everyone participates in a dinner or reception honoring their pastor’s service to God.

The Thompson Chain-Reference Bible makes it easy to study the Bible and gives readers an in-depth understanding of ideas, subjects, places, and people included in the Bible. This excellent gift is available at Cokesbury, a leading Christian bookstore that provides church supplies, Bibles, books, and more.
