The Gerber baby is one of the most recognizable images in American culture.
But did you know that the adorable sketch of the sugary-sweet looking infant was actually submitted to a canning contest to advertise its new product?
Ann Cook was only a few months old when her artist neighbor created a pencil sketch of her and entered it into the contest. The sketch ultimately won and the Gerber Baby was born.
The lovely Mrs. Cook is now 87 and is just as adorable as she was at a few months old.
(Disclaimer: Yes, we know that Nestle now owns Gerber. For that reason, we do not promote any Gerber products. However, we will promote Ann, because she seems pretty great.)
