Spring has sprung and that means it’s time to get your garden in order! You’ve probably been hibernating inside through the winter – forgotten what your garden looks like? Now is the best time to get out there and get it looking beautiful again ready for summer. Just sowing new seeds and mowing your lawn should be enough. But how do you take your outside area to the next level? Here are my five best gardening hacks!
Upcycle Seed Pots
Before you plant some types of seeds outside, they will need to be given time to gestate and grow inside in a warm environment. For this, you need starter pots. One fantastic hack for people on a budget is to upcycle your pots from old household items. Instead of throwing your milk and juice bottles out, cut the bottoms off and plant your seeds in them! This won’t cost you the world and you can use these homemade pots again and again.
Make Your Very Own Tool Cleaner
Fill a plant pot with coarse sand. And in a little bit of mineral oil. You’ll be able to find this in your local gardening centre. And there you have it, a self-cleaning tool holder! Once you are finished your gardening chores, you simply stand your tools in the sand. Standing in the sand, they will add some cute decoration to your garden. The sand and oil will also clean them off, so you don’t have to take everything inside for a wash!
Use Coffee
Want to keep pests away from your plants, but want a natural alternative to pesticides? Use ground coffee! This may sound slightly crazy, but you’ll be surprised to see how useful this trick is! Little insects and animals will be put off by the smell and taste of coffee, and will leave your flowers well alone! The benefits of coffee don’t stop there, though – it’s also high in nutrients and will enrich your soil!
Don’t Forget Sugar
Coffee isn’t the only thing in your kitchen that can be used in the garden. Next time you go outside, take a pot of sugar with you! It acts as a useful weed killer. Sick of weeds getting in the way of all your delicious homegrown veggies? They’re easy to get rid of with sugar! Water the weeds and then pour a sugar solution onto the ground around them. The solution will dissolve down into the soil and prevent their roots from growing.
