Essential Dubrovnik Seafood

Written by:  Rex

For all of you travelers out there, you know that visiting the Mediterranean has so much to offer in terms of history, beauty and memories.  Anyone looking for a European holiday packed with exciting culinary delights should visit Dubrovnik, Croatia this year where fresh Mediterranean seafood is always on the menu. Being right on the coast of the stunning Adriatic, Dubrovnik is an absolute haven for seafood lovers. Here is our pick of the 3 best places to eat seafood in Dubrovnik.

Proto

Dating back to 1886, Proto is one of the oldest restaurants in town. Located in the heart of the old town at the corner of Siroka Street, this historic restaurant is renowned for the finest seafood. It’s speciality is in classy Dalmatian seafood such as fresh oysters, sea bream fillet in olive paste, skampi na buzaru (shrimps in garlic, white wine and parsley) and grilled Adriatic squid. The fish specialties are prepared according to traditional recipes handed down by Dubrovnik fishermen.

Orsan

Located within the Orsan Yacht Club on the Lapad peninsula, Orsan serves excellent traditionally prepared fresh fish and shellfish dishes. Two great dishes to try are the octopus salad and black risotto (made from cuttlefish ink). Orsan consists of three separate parts, with the terrace being the main attraction. If you dine at the terrace, you can get a superb view of the yachts and huge cruisers moored in the Gruz Port.

Sushi & Oyster Bar Bota

If you love fresh oysters and Japanese food, head to Bota. This restaurant serves beautiful fusions of Dalmatian and Japanese cuisine. Its interior also boosts a West meets East design with a combination of European and Japanese architecture. It is located in a small street near the Cathedral and has a lovely terrace with high tables and stools. A must try dish is oysters in tempura. If you’re looking for a big feast, order a plate of shrimp tempura, special roll Bota, Philadelphia roll, tuna carpaccio and smoked tuna prosciutto.

There are two popular seafood dishes you can find in many Dubrovnik restaurants. The traditional riba na gradele i blitva (mixed grilled fish paired served with boiled potatoes) has an authentic taste and is ideal for hot summer days. And Brudet, a fish stew made of many types of fish placed in layers in a single pot and cooked in tomato sauce.

There is no better way to experience Croatian culture than through its cuisine. Dubrovnik holidays are readily available from most major travel operators. These 3 restaurants in Dubrovnik are all great places to try exciting fresh Adriatic seafood.
