Common Moving Home Mistakes, And What Families Can Do About It

Written by:  Jamie

Moving home is a difficult time for families. Parents are stressed out of their brains with sorting out all the paperwork and going to visit properties, and kids find change stressful, especially if it involves moving to a new location or going to a new school. A moving company’s website can help alleviate some of that stress by helping with the planning of your long distance move.

With that said, the last thing you want is for moving day to turn out to be a disaster. Here are some of the things that moms tend to forget on moving day.

Mistake #1: Not Labelling Boxes

When there are so many different things to think about, the small things, like labeling boxes, are easily forgotten. It might not seem like such a small thing, but when all your stuff is piled up in the removal van, finding the things that you need can be tough. The first day in your new home can turn into chaos because you don’t know where everything is and it all ends up scattered all over your floor.

The solution? According to experts, the labeling of boxes is one of the top things that families forget to do when moving home. You don’t have to label boxes with stickers or anything complicated like that – just take a marker pen and mark boxes with the room that they go in. This will then allow you to take boxes to the relevant parts of your new house before unpacking. Also, don’t forget to warn moving companies about boxes containing things that might break with the word “fragile.”

Mistake #2: Accidentally Packing Things You Shouldn’t

Once you get into packing everything up, it can be difficult to take your foot off the gas. You end up packing everything, not realizing that it will be hard to get to once you arrive at your new home. Owners make these kinds of mistakes all the time, packing all the clothes they need for their first day and not having anything to wear.

The solution is to keep everything you’ll need on the day of the move on your person. That means packing a toiletries bag, as well as some clothes. If you’re moving to a different country, make sure you’ve got a separate bag for things like passports, expensive jewelry, and phone chargers.  Also it is preferred to keep a handy moving checklist that helps you figure out your priority and essential purposes. It will also save your time and keep you focused. If you pack without a good plan, you’ll be likely to end up way behind schedule, which will hurt your chances of having a stress-free move

Mistake #3: Moving On A Friday

Moving on a Friday seems like such a good idea. You’ve got the entire weekend to unpack and settle into your new home and, if you work during the week, it shouldn’t interrupt your regular schedule.

But moving on a Friday can be difficult. For one, everybody has had the same idea, meaning that Fridays are usually the busiest day of the week for removal companies. Another reason not to move on a Friday is that it is difficult to get problems in your new house sorted on a Friday night or at the weekend. There are lots of horror stories about families moving into new homes, only to find that the water or the electricity doesn’t work and not being able to get anybody to come out and fix it.

The bottom line: try moving mid-week so that you can hire professionals if you have any problems.
