“The phases will drive you up a f-ing wall. You’ll be like, ‘I cannot take the- whatever it is- the colicky phase, the diaper phase…’ And they keep going, but they pass, and nobody ever tells you that in the books. This too shall pass.” -Kevin Bacon, Fatherhood
A few years ago, Hank Azaria began interviewing his celebrity colleagues for a documentary about fatherhood. Azaria was vocal about the fact that he had no desire to be a father, but was curious to know why so many men have the drive to start a family.
Coincidentally, just as he began filming, his longtime girlfriend found out she was pregnant. This news threw the documentary for a loop. He continued the documentary, still interviewing his friends while chronicling his own journey into fatherhood.
In the first episode of this docu-series, Azaria’s girlfriend develops Preeclampsia, and his child has to be delivered 10 weeks early. The image of him holding his 2.5lb baby for the first time, in the NICU, is extremely compelling. The funny man goes from skeptic to warrior-dad before your eyes.
The show does a great job of mixing lighthearted anecdotes with sometimes serious and emotional issues faced by many parents.
