Breastfeeding in Prison

Written by:  Jamie

Did you know that San Quentin (all-male prison) has a lactation booth for breastfeeding/pumping moms who are breastfeeding?

My cousin is a lawyer and also currently breastfeeding, so her visit today to San Quentin pleasantly surprised her when she found out they offered this space.

Of course, no phones or cameras are allowed in, but she did snap a photo of what she pumped in the parking lot:

Here is some San Quentin visiting information I found from 2011:

“Nursing mothers shall be discreet and covered when breast-feeding their baby in the visiting area. Failure to do so may result in termination of visiting for that day.”

Granted, it’s a prison, but do you think there should be this limitation on public breastfeeding?

Do you think they should change this rule for visitors or do you think it is fair given that it’s a prison?

It is definitely an interesting debate question.
