Leave it to the internet to try to shit on something positive.
You may have heard that Alicia Keys announced that she was completely over makeup back in May, but I don’t think anyone realized how serious she was until she followed through with a completely bare face at the VMAs.
Check her out-
And that isn’t even “no makeup, makeup” – she’s got a totally bare face.
Oh Alicia, I wouldn’t wear makeup if I were you either.
Alicia even made it clear that she wasn’t shaming those who wear makeup…
…she was making a personal choice to challenge the intense social pressure placed upon females, especially in the entertainment industry.
To do this, Alicia’s brave and liberating choice was eliminating makeup from her routine.
But then there are people like Piers Morgan, who just cannot fathom the concept of feminism and empowering one idea without putting down others…
So @aliciakeys wore no make-up to #VMAs.
100 times more ’empowering’ than @KimKardashian @emrata‘s naked selfies. pic.twitter.com/0QYyqDE1Mg— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) August 29, 2016
Oh Piers…
Unfortunately Piers isn’t alone. There have been a bunch of people jumping on the shaming bandwagon and attempting to use Keys’ bare face to do it.
I mean, wearing makeup can be a negative thing if we’re wearing it purely for the purpose of pleasing others and being accepted in society.
But makeup, like any other accessory, can be used for lots of different things…
Like covering up scars…
Personal expression and identity…
Cosplay…
Or just for fun!
The point is, really anything you do should be about making you happy.
And maybe you might want to reevaluate your reason for doing anything, if you are doing it for other people.
Let’s say you’re afraid to leave the house without makeup on…
This may be a good time to reexamine why you want to use makeup in the first place.
And once you realign your priorities, it will be all good again…
So wear or don’t wear makeup, paint or don’t paint your toenails, shave your body hair or let it grow to wild majestic lengths….
*Cue India Arie*
Others have no say over your own body image…
You be you.
