Nashville star Hayden Panettiere has recently joined the mom club but, like so many others, it hasn’t been the easiest journey. Hayden and her fiance, Wladimir Klitschko, welcomed their daughter Kaya Evdokia into the world December 2014.
In a questionnaire for Us Weekly Hayden admits that she has gone through the same thing as roughly 1 in 5 new moms.
I suffered a bit of postpartum depression. You’re not alone or crazy, ladies!
On Monday, Hayden once again opened up on Live! With Kelly and Michael about her postpartum depression, admitting that like so many others she had an incorrect image of what PPD looks like.
I can very much relate. It’s something a lot of women experience. When [you’re told] about postpartum depression you think it’s ‘I feel negative feelings towards my child, I want to injure or hurt my child’ — I’ve never, ever had those feelings. Some women do. But you don’t realize how broad of a spectrum you can really experience that on. It’s something that needs to be talked about. Women need to know that they’re not alone, and that it does heal
Some common signs of PPD are:
-
Depressed mood or severe mood swings.
-
Excessive crying.
-
Difficulty bonding with your baby.
-
Withdrawing from family and friends.
-
Loss of appetite or eating much more than usual.
-
Inability to sleep (insomnia) or sleeping too much.
-
Overwhelming fatigue or loss of energy.
If you feel any of these please seek help from your doctor, midwife, doula, or local support groups (which can be found at Postpartum Progress). You are not the first, you won’t be the last and there is no shame in asking for help.
This conversation needs to continue so women know they are not alone.
Update: Hayden’s rep confirmed she has entered treatment for her depression.
Hayden Panettiere is voluntarily seeking professional help at a treatment center as she is currently battling postpartum depression. She asks that the media respect her privacy during this time,
We wish her all the best on this healing journey.
