Photographer Jade Beall used her own struggle with body image as the inspiration behind posting her post-birth body on her website.
There was an immediate and overwhelming response to her images. Women related and seemed fed-up with mainstream media’s unrealistic and doctored images of women bombarding not only themselves, but their children, daily.
Women are saying no to shaming and comparing their bodies to computer generated images of women in a society that is caught up with age, Western beauty ideals, and unrealistic expectations for healthy human beings.
It seems that soon after Jade posted her own photos, the idea for “A Beautiful Body” book project was born. The idea is having women photographed in these beautiful and simplistic settings, sometimes with their children. They seem to be reveling in (un-airbrushed) beautiful settings surrounded by love from the people around them, and the self-love and self assurance of knowing their bodies are something to be celebrated.
The photo of the child touching the mother’s c-section scar, and the breastfeeding images catching a letdown of milk were the ones that touched me the most.
*Update*: Jade met her Kickstarter goal and this project has taken off! Check out how the project is progressing at her website: A Beautiful Body Project!
