5 Ways to Save Money on an Iceland Vacation

Written by:  Jamie

Are you thinking long and hard about booking an Iceland vacation? Do you have reason to believe that this could be the most exciting trip you ever take? Are you a bit concerned that the price may be too much for you to handle?

Although there is a lot that goes into planning an Iceland vacation, it’s nice to know that the right approach can save you quite a bit of time. On top of this, knowing what you want to accomplish will allow you to move through the booking process in a fast and efficient manner.

Nate Robertson, founder of squareship, considers Iceland one of the top vacation destinations in the world. He’s visited many times in the past, and shares the following advice for booking a trip:

“Although it can be great fun to visit Iceland, people need to remember that it can take some time to get all the right details in place. This is why it’s essential to give yourself enough time to figure things out. From your flight to your hotel, there is one detail after the next to contend with.”

If you’re excited about visiting Iceland for your next vacation, here are five ways to save money:

  1. Shop for a Cheap Flight

This is often the biggest expense of an Iceland vacation, so you need to search for ways to save.

Fortunately, finding a cheap flight to anywhere in the world is easier than ever before. This doesn’t mean you can fly round trip for a few dollars, but there are steps you can take to keep some cash in your pocket.

For example, use Expedia to find cheap flights to Iceland. Doing this will give you access to all your options, as well as an overview of the best way to save money.

  1. Be Reasonable When Booking a Hotel

It’s easy to go overboard when booking a hotel in Iceland, as there are so many options to choose from.

While you may love the idea of booking a stay at a luxury hotel, it may be hard to find a way to fit it into your budget.

You can book a stay at a very nice hotel without breaking the bank. You simply need to keep an open mind, which starts with comparing as many hotels as you can find.

  1. Find Free Things to do

You don’t have to spend money to enjoy yourself in Iceland. For example, you could opt to go hiking one day, as opposed to visiting a museum, which will save you a bit of money.

Before you ever leave home, make a list of the many free activities that are available in Iceland. With this list in hand, you can stay busy all without spending a dollar. How cool is that?

  1. Eat for Free (or Cheap)

Iceland is home to some of the best restaurants in the world, and there is nothing wrong with wanting to check a few of these out during your trip. However, you don’t want to get into the habit of eating out several times per day.

Maybe you can eat breakfast for free at your hotel. Or maybe you can find a fast food joint that makes sense for lunch.

If you’re going to eat out, limit yourself to once per day. This one change to your approach can save you big money.

  1. Don’t Check Your Luggage

It may sound impossible to travel light on your trip to Iceland, but once you realize this can save you money it’s something you’ll figure out.

Why check your luggage when you don’t have to? Not only does it cost money, but you have to worry about it getting lost (which could ruin your trip).

Most airlines allow one bag or suitcase, and one carry-on item such as a purse or messenger bag. Pack lightly and you will save money, as well as time in the airport terminal.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, there are many ways to save money on an Iceland vacation. It doesn’t mean you can travel for free, but there are things you can do to cut costs every now and again.

If you follow these five tips, it won’t be long before you realize just how simple it is to save money, while still enjoying yourself.

Do you have any experience traveling to Iceland? Is this something you enjoyed? Were you able to have a good time, all without overspending?
