1. Avoid buying used car seats
While they are affordable and cheap to buy, they come with a set of faults that may cause inconvenience and maybe hazardous to the health of the baby. If you have no choice but buy a used baby car seat inspect it thoroughly and follow these rules for buying a used car seat.
Make sure that the used car seat is not more than 6 years old. It must not have any visible damage done to its parts of the seat itself. The used car seat must not have experienced a car crash. Study the history of the car seat before buying it.
2. Don’t place the car seat in the wrong place
The best position to place the car seat is in the middle position. If you place the car seat in the wrong position, it may wiggle and not be safe for the baby when you are driving the car.
If there is an accident, the air bags could injure the child if the car seat is placed in the wrong position. You can also place the car seat at the back of the seat for safety.
3. Incorrect installation and buckling of the car seat
Follow the instructions given in the manual for installing the car seat. When you install the car seat and buckle it up, ensure that it is secured tightly and there are no loose ends. Make sure that your seat belts are in good working condition and consider Seat Belt Repair Services if there are any issues.
Whether you are using a forward-facing, rear-facing, or a convertible car seat you can follow these tips to install it correctly along with the buckling system in place. Along with the car seat place small blankets for the head and neck support of the baby. You can also use wash towels near the crotch straps for the comfort of the baby.
4. Do not let your child recline at an incorrect angle
Recline the car seat that you install as per the instructions of the manual. Rear-facing, forward-facing, and convertible seats have various reclining positions.
Know these positions so that you correctly recline the seat when your baby is seated inside the car seat. As your baby grows into the seat you must adjust the angle of the recliner as per the age and height of the body of the baby. For an infant and a newborn rear-facing car seat is recommended as you can watch the child in the rear view mirror.
5. Place blankets after buckling the seat
Do not buckle the seat with the blankets and the towels already placed in. You need the place the baby in the seat, secure them in straps, and then place towels and blankets to keep them secure and prevent them from any kind of injuries. Also, do not move from the car seat to the booster seat too soon. Booster seats are for toddlers.
Let the child grow into the car seat before you make the switch. When using a booster car seat you must use the shoulder as well as the lap belt and not the lap belt alone. The belts and straps must not squeeze the stomach of the baby and must lie low on the car seat.
Ensure that the harness straps are in the right slot. The harness must be used correctly and make sure that you remove all the fluff covering from the seat as it can cause body heat for the baby which can pose a hazard.
6. Use adult seat belt only when the child is a toddler
Adult seat belts can only be used only when the child is 8 years or above. Use the booster or the convertible seat when the baby grows out of its infancy. Does not transition from a car seat to the adult seat too soon as the child might not fit into the adult car seat belt.
