4 Things You Can Do to Stay Healthy

Written by:  Rex

When you improve your health, you will also improve the overall quality of your life. Follow these tips to embrace a healthier lifestyle.

Eat Healthier Foods

Try to eat a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Include a variety of fruit, vegetables, nuts, and legumes throughout your meals to keep them well balanced. Your meals should be made up of lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains. Try making more of your meals at home to have more control over the ingredients. Use recipe sites like the Kitchen Community to learn new recipes and get guidance on your cooking. Try to avoid eating too much sugar. Eating excessive amounts of sugar can lead to tooth decay, inflammation, and other health issues. If you are struggling with your diet and your relationship to food, consider meeting with a licensed nutritionist who can help you plan your meals and form healthier eating habits.

See Your Doctor

It’s important to establish care with a trusted physician who can administer regular wellness checks and address any health concerns you may have. Even if you feel you are healthy, you should still see your doctor. Your doctor can perform important routine tests for sexually-transmitted infections and other diseases as well as administer any vaccinations you may need to get. Preventive health screenings allow you to stay on top of your health and catch diseases early on. The earlier your doctor can catch signs of illness or disease the easier it will be to treat and manage the symptoms before they develop into something more serious.

Exercise Often

Regular exercise helps your blood circulate oxygen and nutrients around your body more efficiently. Exercising helps your cardiovascular system and helps build muscle strength and endurance. Without regular movement, your muscles and bones will become weaker. As you grow older you will become more prone to injury and falling. Keep yourself active and move your body often to help retain your strength and agility. Exercise helps maintain a healthy weight, improve your quality of sleep, and reduce feelings of stress and depression. If you don’t enjoy lifting weights or going to the gym, you can find exercises you have fun doing. Try joining a sports team, going for a bike ride, or taking a Zumba class.

Avoid Alcohol and Tobacco

When you consume alcohol, your liver must work harder than usual to process and break down the alcohol. Drinking alcohol causes dehydration and inflammation within the body which can contribute to the disruption of your gut and liver function. Excessive drinking can lead to several health problems including liver cirrhosis, heart disease, and cancer. Smoking tobacco not only harms you but those around you through second-hand exposure. Smoking can cause very serious diseases like heart disease, lung disease chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cancer. If you smoke, you are putting yourself at an increased risk for strokes and problems with your immune system. The good thing is that you can quit smoking at any time. When you quit smoking, you will feel immediate benefits and your lung function will begin to improve. Over time you will reduce your risk of infection and disease.

Use these tips to take good care of your health and feel your best every day.
