Breastfeeding for the first time

This is a guest post for iamnotthebabysitter.com. We encourage voices of all mothers on the topics discussed on this blog. The views and opinions may not be those of iamnotthebabysitter.com, but we encourage and welcome respectful debate and the opinions of all mothers. Being a first time mom is scary. I remember that when my son was just a tiny newborn I was so afraid that my milk wasn't going to be enough for him.  I remember watching the numbers on the scale so nervously hoping they … [Read more...]

Public Breastfeeding Conversations

Yesterday I went to the UPS store to mail a double breast pump and breastfeeding loot to a local friend, and also the infamous TIME issue to a friend in Spain who never could find a copy and wanted to read the article.   I tried to hide the cover until I had to give it to the postman to mail. He picked it up and weighed it while Aram walked up to read the numbers on the scale. The man saw the cover of the magazine had been written on (I had crossed out the “Mom Enough” tagline and … [Read more...]

Toddler Nursing Myths Debunked

Photo on 2011-06-16 at 12.19 #3_2

Breastfeeding moms of toddlers respond to common breastfeeding misconceptions about nursing past infancy: Myth: Breastfeeding will ruin your boobs! Truth: Your breasts will inflate through your pregnancy and engorgement when your milk comes whether your nurse your babies or not! Vanity has been known to get the best of me.  I'll admit it.  I'll even confess that some decisions I made about my health might have been motivated by said vanity, said the girl who quit smoking in … [Read more...]

Nurse-In Report!

IMG_0554

Well, I went! Much to Brian's relief there were no arrests or babies in mini handcuffs- maybe next time. I wrote about it for MomsLA What surprised me the most is the absolute hatred people have for women wanting to feed their babies! I won't post any of the blog links because I am not in the mood to give them more traffic. I've pretty much ranted enough about our cultures weird views of breasts. So I won't get into it. Here is my issue. I am completely for free speech, but I … [Read more...]

Everyone Meet Janelle! Tell us about your personal breastfeeding experience with your children: I always knew I would breastfeed my children.  When I had my first child, at the age of twenty, I had no expectations about how breastfeeding was “supposed” to go, nor were there ever thoughts about not being able to nurse.  My daughter’s birth was challenging; her latch was poor and no one offered me any help while at the hospital, despite noting on my chart that our nursing … [Read more...]

Clever Cleavage- Adoptive Breastfeeding

I'd like everyone to meet Jenny! She is a rock star in the breastfeeding world! 1. Tell us about your personal breastfeeding experience with your children: My daughter joined our family via adoption when she was 10 months old. I had followed the Newman-Goldfarb Protocols for Induced Lactation (www.asklenore.info/breastfeeding/induced_lactation/gn_protocols.shtml) for the previous 12 months so that I’d be able to breastfeed her. I amazed both my husband and myself when I was able to … [Read more...]

Breastfeeding Rant

I am most stressed out breastfeeding in public when I'm at church. I rarely nurse in public now that Aram is getting older and self-weaning, but I still think about my past negative experiences. It started when Aram was about 18 months old. I would enter the 'mother's nursing room' (specifically designed for mothers to breastfeed) and every single mother is wearing a cover. I always thought the point of the room was so you didn't have to wear a cover (not that I do when … [Read more...]

Extended Breastfeeding Photos

I was speaking to a woman the other day who said she was so sad she never had taken a picture of her breastfeeding her child. There is no going back once it is over. That inspired me to take some extended breastfeeding photos. My mother has some of me, and I'm so glad she took them. I wanted the same for my children. You always hear people say, "if they can ask for it they are too old." I'll be happy to say my kids not only can ask for it, but say thank you and give hand signals:   … [Read more...]
