Confrontation at MMA Class: A “Bad Kid”?

meme1

Yesterday was an interesting day. I called and called around looking for push-up pop molds. Finally, a Sur La Table employee flippantly responded that they indeed carried the product. After a 30 minute drive to the store, paid parking, and two little boys ready for breakfast in tow, we arrived. The man I approached at Sur La Table was extremely apologetic, but explained they did not carry the stupid push-pop molds. (I would like the know if the other employee I spoke to on the phone would … [Read more...]

Breastfeeding Billboard Jokes About Pedophilia

meme11

A billboard featuring a woman breastfeeding her infant (with the breast area blurred out) and the caption (coming from the infant) “Jealous?” is making news because a website geared toward matching younger men with older women is using this as their advertisement. Regardless of the true intentions of a company that put this thought out into the world, it does bring up some obvious issues. Advertising is like a time capsule revealing some of our more shameful ideas of the past.  … [Read more...]

Real Men of Attachment Parenting: Immersed in Deaf Culture

Chuck Malani

From his wife... This is Chuck...he was a pretty hard core type of guy before Sloane came along. She tempered him and tests his temper, but he does so much to make her life great. He supported me through our unplanned pregnancy, home birth, and nursing her for 3 years. He changed diapers and does everything "good" dads do (Princess balls, baby/toddler wearing, park adventures, and "getting beautified" by her), but he takes one extra step that most dads are never confronted with. He is … [Read more...]

Comfy Joey Ring Sling Giveaway

CJBlue

While we used wrap/ring slings/carriers about 12 hours a day when my son was an infant, they are still a vital part of our life - although he's three years old. My little guy is very social - he loves to be around people and spends his whole day talking. But, he is still sensitive to lots of noise and stimulation. Occasionally, when we've had a busy morning, he gets overstimulated around lunch time and gets so agitated that he can't relax enough to eat so he can take his nap. On these days, a … [Read more...]

What I Wish I Had Known Before Our International Adoption

IMG_0050

If I could have written a letter to myself before we started the international adoption process, here are some things I wish I would have known. Some I already knew, but after adopting (or going through the process) others became much clearer to me. Adoption and parenting in general are selfless. Keep in mind that you are not just adopting a family member, but there is a mutual merger of birth and adopted families, culture, and country. Research thoroughly. Melissa Fay Greene recommends The … [Read more...]

Enough About Kim Kardashian’s Pregnancy Appearance

meme1

I am working really hard to be neutral and to understand where even the most trite and insolent comments from others come from. Then I read an article like this from the Huffington Post and it makes me sad for pregnant women in our society...and a little angry. I understand (to some extent) the point of this article; the author is a fashion editor. Writing an article about maternity fashion tips seems logical.  Kim Kardashian is a hot topic. A pregnant Kim Kardashian is even … [Read more...]

Breastfeeding Art: Ghana

meme1

Brian surprised me with an early Mother's Day present. It a hand-carved breastfeeding mother with child. The wooden statue came from Ghana, which is a very special place to me. (Yes, those are our pet shrimp next to the figure.) Breastfeeding artwork from around the world delights me. There is a literal and symbolic meaning with nearly every piece. We decided to also use her as a literal and figurative symbol- so we placed her at our bar. … [Read more...]

New Study on Bullies and Bullying

meme1

Yahoo came out with an article about the new study in the Journal of Child Abuse and Neglect about bullying. The title of Yahoo's article was Study: Overprotective Parenting Can Lead to Bullied Children I found this article to be truthful, yet slightly sensational in approach...but I clicked on it, so 'mission accomplished,' Yahoo. And you know what? I'm glad that I did. I actually read the study. You can get it here. Quick notes from the study: Overprotective and maladaptive parenting= … [Read more...]

Arrested for Swaddling

meme1

I'm from the East Bay, and my family still lives up there. I was a little shocked to hear two day-care workers in the area were arrested for dangerous swaddling practices (i.e. too tight). (Both of the workers are pregnant and each have one other child. ) I'm not a huge fan of swaddling, but there are doctors (like Harvey Karp) who teach safe swaddling practices. The women who swaddled these babies did so (it seems) to restrict their movements, not to recreate the feeling of safety in the … [Read more...]

Walk of Shame: Family Style

IMG_6172

Most of us know the definition: The Walk of Shame: an instance of walking back home on the day after an unplanned overnight encounter,  dressed in the same clothes as the previous evening. Of course the original intended meaning behind it was to slut-shame women- let’s ignore that for this post. We had a G-rated “walk of shame” as a family this morning. We had a movie night with our friends and the kids fell asleep in the guest bedroom. Unfortunately, we’re not as young as we … [Read more...]
