Meet the Dream Team- Awassa or Bust

This upcoming trip to Ethiopia is bringing some amazing people together.

I’d like to introduce our little group:

The Ring Leader: Meet Paul Chadha

President of the Awassa Children’s Project, Attorney, Professor at Northwestern- not to mention husband and father! Thanks to him, we will be checking out the Awassa Children’s Center and working together to uplift the children and families of the area.

The Writer: Shannon Colleary

Writes for the Huffington Post and The Woman Formerly Known As Beautiful

The Doctor: Dr. Jay Gordon

Dr. Gordon is a celebrity in his own right. He speaks about topics other doctors shy away from, and is known as a revolutionary “attachment parenting” doctor. His medical expertise and presence will be a huge bonus for the children of ACP and our team.

The Travel Specialist: Terry von Guilleaume

Head of Destination Southern Africa and the nonprofit, DSA Pays It Forward. Terry is the amazing coordinator for all of our African adventures. His team specializes in family travel and he knows the continent well (Terry is originally from South Africa). Terry and some of his team will be coming with us, and we are so excited.

The OG Photographer: Kyle LaMere

Kyle is a veteran traveler to Awassa. He is the one to credit for all of the Awassa Children’s Project website photos. Follow him on twitter: @ishootrockstars

(and it is a good thing he shoots rockstars…)

The Rockstar: Paul Perry

yes, even my very busy bass playing rockstar buddy is making time for this trip.

And last, but certainly not least….

The Photojournalist Adventurer: Lori Dorman

My family met Lori Dorman when she came to our home to take photos for the upcoming issue of Pathways to Family Wellness. By the end of the photo session she was coming to Ethiopia with us!

Lori has an incredible talent for capturing the essence of motherhood. The stories she tells with her photographs make her the perfect person to help tell the story of the people of Ethiopia. We are so excited to have her!

  1. What a great team! So bummed I can’t join you :-( Will be following the journey and praying for the success of your efforts.

  2. What a great group! So jealous that I can’t go along:) But John and I are already planning our family trip next summer, so maybe the stars will align and I can meet you in Sidama then!!!

Wow – small world! Terry was a member of the residential hall staff at my high school (Alabama School of Math & Science) 14 years ago. I haven’t seen him since, but we’re facebook friends! lol.

I haven’t been following you that long (admittedly, the Time cover led me here). I love your blog and also love your Mommy Hates Chemicals blog.

Looks like y’all have an amazing trip ahead of you!

  4. Jamie,

I have been following your blog for about a year and hope to be as caring a parent as you are when I have children. One question, is your whole family going? Do you have any tips for traveling with young kids? I’m going on a 13 hour road trip with my 3-year-old niece in a month and we could use any tips you have.

    • iPad. Unless she gets car sick. I think 8 hours is the longest car ride we’ve done. We do 5 pretty frequently. My suggestion is to take as many stops as you like, but at least try to stop every 2-3 hours just to stretch your legs. Bring lots of snacks. Bring fun music for the car….and if worse comes to worse- a sing along. ;-) — the main thing is keeping her engaged so she doesn’t get totally bored. And hopefully she will nap a couple hours out of that trip.

  5. I so badly want to come, but then you’d have 3 photographers along and I am sure I pale in comparison to the other two!!

  6. WHERE AM I!?!?
