Breastfeeding or Bottle Feeding Dolls?

SCAN0184

I found this photo of myself as a child yesterday: My first thought: "That is a massive scrunchy." My second thought: "I'm bottle feeding my baby doll." Perhaps to retaliate from our anti-breastfeeding culture many women decide to become anti-bottle feeding as a response. I have friends who will not allow their children to have dolls that come with bottles. They will throw away the bottle that comes with the doll, and some have even purchased the "The Breast Milk Baby" for their … [Read more...]

Human Judgement

I believe there is a basic kind of judgement that allows humans to assess every aspect of life. We are kept safe (either ourselves or by others) with this kind of "assessment judgement". This kind of judgement allows you to make choices for your own life and family, form healthy opinions, and take action in dangerous situations. Then there is the kind of judgement I find to be toxic to humanity. This is the type of judgement where humans give value to other human beings based on an action or … [Read more...]

Taking a Stand For What You Believe In

IMG_1673

I keep getting asked this question: "Do you think using the media is good way to spread an important message?" I absolutely do! There are some things worth mentioning before jumping into something as crazy as a potential media firestorm, though.   MAKE SURE THE DECISION IS UNANIMOUS. Your entire family needs to be on-board. You are a unit, make important decisions as one. A media firestorm will effect every member of your family, so you'll all need to be prepared.   DO NOT TAKE … [Read more...]

Homeboy Industries

IMG_1895

Today I will be spending my morning at Homeboy Industries. Last week, I brought my friend Shannon on a bit of an adventure (the girl is up for anything fun) to check out what Homeboy is cooking up-  and apparently that would be baked goods and salsa (among other things). Homeboy Industries serves at-risk and gang involved youth with a continuum of services and programs designed to meet their multiple needs, and runs four businesses that serve as job-training sites. - source I mentioned to … [Read more...]

Brian’s Locks of Love

IMG_1809

My husband lost his mother to cancer when he was only eight years old. He still vividly remembers the wigs she would wear during the time of her treatment. A couple of months ago we started talking about his mother and what he remembered about her when she was ill. The conversation ended with Brian deciding to grow out and donate his hair to Wigs for Kids. Brian has been successfully growing out his hair for months, but he hit a very awkward stage the last few weeks. I assured him I could … [Read more...]

Kid World Citizen- Helping Young Minds Go Global

kid_world_citizen3

My husband and I always knew we wanted to raise our children with a global perspective. We knew we could do this by traveling with our children. However, the education doesn’t need to stop when we are home in the US. One of the best resources that I’ve discovered which teaches children about other cultures is Kid World Citizen. They have in-depth country information (organized by continent). Get snack ideas and recipes from other cultures, learn how Christmas is celebrated all over the … [Read more...]

Examples of Societies Where Children Nurse For Many Years

Dr. Katherine Dettywyler sent me this information about societies where children breastfeed for many years. (shared with permission): NOTE: Anthropologists no longer refer to any society or group of people as being “primitive” or “savage” or “barbaric” – people who have very simple technological resources may nonetheless be quite sophisticated in terms of religion, philosophy, kinship systems, art, music, etc. Therefore, please excuse the following authors for using the … [Read more...]

Clever Cleavage- Jessica’s Story

Picture 24

Everyone Meet Jessica! Breastfeeding, for me, typifies mothering. It nourishes, comforts, heals, and soothes. I love nursing my children, and I love to talk about it. When I had my first son 5 years ago, I assumed that I would put him to the breast and he would eat. Not quite. After flat nipples, pumping and feeding with a little plastic tube, nipple shields, bleeding, cracking, being diagnosed with Reynaud’s phenomenon of the nipple (blood vessels spasm, crippling pain), and a poor … [Read more...]
