When I first started this blog my intention was to keep our family informed during the adoption process. I had no idea blogging would connect me with so many like-minded people, as well as provide an outlet for my thoughts. Here are the top reasons I love to blog: There are no rules- I can dedicate an entire ridiculous post to why I have a phobia of blood pressure cuffs, and no one can stop me. Okay, there are rules- mine- Truthfully, this blog has turned into a safe haven and I … [Read more...]

My husband and I always knew we wanted to raise our children with a global perspective. We knew we could do this by traveling with our children. However, the education doesn’t need to stop when we are home in the US. One of the best resources that I’ve discovered which teaches children about other cultures is Kid World Citizen. They have in-depth country information (organized by continent). Get snack ideas and recipes from other cultures, learn how Christmas is celebrated all over the … [Read more...]

When we started out on this Pre-30 Bucket List we never thought so much would get crossed off in one year. I guess that is what makes life wonderful and scary at the same time- As much as you plan for your future, you really don’t know what it holds. We can check off a few more to the list: Number 24- Visit New York: Not only did we visit once, but twice in one week. Number 19- Get featured on TV/radio/print/newspapers for something we believe in. This one makes us laugh now. … [Read more...]

Disneyland now has competition. We took the boys to the Palm Springs Air Museum. It has one of the world's largest collections of flyable WWII aircrafts. Never in a million years would I have believed Aram and Samuel could spend a whole day here and be entertained. Well, to my surprised that is exactly what happened. The boys were enthralled by all of the fighter planes and the stories that went with each aircraft. Any history buff or child with a love of airplanes will be in awe of this … [Read more...]

A couple of weeks ago the Fayye Foundation website launched! There was a bit of chaos during that time, and I thought it was best to wait until it died down to make an announcement on this blog. About Fayye: The Fayye Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing the orphan crisis in the Sidama region of Ethiopia. For more information on why we are focusing on Sidama, visit the “Why Sidama” page. Every family deserves to stay together. However, the HIV/AIDS crisis, … [Read more...]
Dr. Katherine Dettwyler graciously is allowing me to share some of her written work on my blog. She is by far the top Anthropologist in regards to breastfeeding research. I hope everyone is educated and inspired by her thoughtful articles. Here is the first in the series I'll be posting: By Katherine A. Dettwyler A worldwide average age of weaning? That pesky 4.2 year figure. For many years, Ruth Lawrence has claimed in her book Breastfeeding: A Guide … [Read more...]
Well, it's been a crazy week. Brian, Samuel, Aram and I are headed on a plane this morning back to New York! Check out TIME Magazine's website today, and be sure to check out the issue when it hits newsstands Friday. Also...if you are around at 9AM Friday check out the Today Show! … [Read more...]

Most of you know of (or are actively involved in) the start-up of a foundation, being created for the preservation of families in Sidama, Ethiopia. Being involved in what would be considered a "philanthropic endeavor" has had me thinking the past year about the true meaning of philanthropy. Someone the other day used the old saying, "Philanthropy is not about you, it is about other people." The sentiment is nice, but I completely disagree. There seems to be a lot of self-righteousness in a … [Read more...]
Oprah is jokingly referred to as the “third parent” of my family. It is not meant to diminish my parents physical presence or active roles in my life. They clearly were (and still are) the most important people involved in my upbringing. I think of her as how a teacher or other important adult has helped shape a child’s life- but even more so with Oprah, because she literally has been part of my family from infancy to the age of 25. I am the first generation product of “Oprah … [Read more...]
Our hope is that people will get a chance to see a family that may look a little different, but is as close and loving as a family that meets the stereotypical ideal. It is time to break barriers, stop making assumptions, and realize that families come in all different shapes and sizes and can still define the term. Find Out More ››
