My friend Shannon Colleary‘s response to Samuel in this photo:
This is his suave ladies man face. Don’t introduce him to George Hamilton, they’ll paint the town. -Shannon (The Woman Formerly Known As Beautiful)
Samuel (aka Rico Suave) and me braving the 102 degree weather a few days ago. He either is charming the camera or those little eyes are crying for a personal spray bottle fan. Maybe both.

I don’t think I’ve ever commented – I lost my uterus during a post-partum hemmorhage after my daughter’s birth almost a year ago exactly. We are also foster parents, and I resonate with so much of what you write about living life as a multi-racial family as well as what you’ve written about natural birth and our culture’s shift toward medical intervention in that realm.
It would take alot of encouraging for my youngest to continue nursing until she’s 4 (i.e., my offering her sippy cups and alternate sources of drinking NEVER), and I’m wondering if you had to really limit the amount of other fluids your kids got in order to keep them nursing that long?
Cute picture!
Hey Rach! I am so sorry you had a rough time in child-birth, too. It sucks to feel your options have been stripped from you. It is so cool you are seeing it as an opportunity to be a parent through the foster care system.
As far as fluids- Definitely don’t limit it. My son up until 18 months didn’t drink very much water because he was nursing so often, but we still offered water. Some children wean earlier. Every child is different. If your daughter is already started weaning herself- don’t stop it! It is a totally natural process. The average age for humans to wean is 2.5-7 years old. That is average- so it would be normal for some kids to even fall out of that range. With such a wide range for weaning it is impossible to even take two biological children and expect the same weaning time. You are doing everything right, mama!
Hi Jamie,
Thanks so much for your comment on my blog! i LOVE your blog and I’m so glad I found you through the whole Time Magazine saga. I’m so proud of you and the other mamas that took part in that. Have a great weekend
